4WD/locking diff, slippage possible/'normal'?

/ 4WD/locking diff, slippage possible/'normal'? #21
A friend broke his diff lock because he would just stomp on the diff lock pedal when one tire started to spin. It would grind for a brief second before engaging. After years of doing that one day when it popped in it broke the locking mechanism. That required the tractor to be split and then the rear case to be split apart. So try thinking ahead. If I want to go straight and start to see a tire slightly loosing traction I will immediately use the diff lock without letting off the HST pedal. If one tire is spinning at a noticeably faster speed I will let off before locking the rear. I unlocked my brakes the first day I got both of my tractors and never locked them again. I can push both pedals at once when needed but find I use the brakes for turning too often to bother locking it.

Ever try applying a little brake to the tire spinning faster? rather then letting off and locking the diff

In case someone has a problem like this, locking the diff. but still only one tire spinning... someone a while back had one tire low on pressure and the tire was not spinning but the RIM was... I believe it was 4x4 and the front tires were thought to be "not" engaging. Just in case someone did not see that thread, I wanted to mention it here for future interneters.
