Backhoe 485 Backhoe removal & hook up

Hello,

Looking for advice on hooking up my 485 John Deere backhoe to my 4120.

First and foremost I love my 4120 and all it's implements. It does everything I ask it to do with no headaches EXCEPT when I try to put my 485 backhoe on.

The entire process goes quickly and smoothing exccept when I attempt to hook up the hydraulic hoses to the backhoe ! I don't know if its pressure or what the causes it, but it takes forever to get the hydriliuc hoses (two) to seat/lock in correcting.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated !

I was having a heck of a time getting my 448 hoe onto my 4300 until I got used to the procedure. When I first got the hoe it took a while to hook it up from every aspect -- hoses included. Now I have it down to a science and can hook it up in about 2 minutes. Long story short, where it applies to your question is that before I unhook the lines I release the pressure in them much better than I did before. Now the hydraulic lines slide right on. Man I can remember a few times early on cussing like he11.
During hooking the loader up, I also release the pressure on the main lift cylinder and this serves two purposes. First, once the 3pt hitch locks into the hooks on the hoe and engages and lifts it if I release pressure on the main lift cylinder it drops/rotates the bottom catches on the hoe into their position on the subframe. This makes it much easier to raise everything into position, and it takes out any built up pressure in the line out and therefore makes life much easier when its time to hook up the hydraulics.

I'm not sure I'm following you 100%. The main lift cylinder? I have a 3320 and only took off and put on the 485 (448) BH once but it took me about 20 minutes and I had to use the stabilizer arms to get it in position not the 3PH.

I've had the 485 BH on/off my 4320 several times since new about a year ago. Two things. First, when removing the hoe make sure it is resting with little/no pressure on the cylinders and the hose connections will be much easier to connect/disconnect. Second, there is an up-stop adjustment for the 3ph which when adjusted properly will enable lifting the hoe high enough to insert the two top pins w/o using the stabilizers. The up-stop adjustment has been discussed before and can be found with the search mechanism. I had to do it on my current 4320.

Yeah, that's how mine works using the 3ph. Once you adjust that and get the pins to slide in using that only, then take the pressure off of all the cylinders and the lines will go on much easier.

After the pressure is off remember to shut down the tractor before you try to hook up the 2 hose.

I read somewhere that you had to be very careful adjusting the pin because you could over extend the 3PH and do damage. So I haven't touched the adjustment.

My JD dealer told me this also. He said very little adjustment is usually needed to raise the 485 far enough to insert the pins. They routinely have to do it. If memory serves me correctly, it only took about 1/4 turn to raise my 3ph to easily install/remove the pins.

I forgot to mention that the 3pt was out of adjustment so I can't pick it up high enough to get the pins in so I've been trying to use the stablizer arms/etc. to get it up high enough.

Sounds like once I get it adjusted I will have no more problems.

After watching the Deere video on how fast and easy it was put on and remove, we took it back. I got my dealer to watch the video as well and then they went to work. After a day of making adjustments I can now connect and disconnect the 485 in about two minutes and the 485 sits on it's frame with no support. So to you that are having troubles, watch the Deere video on their web site and then make your dealer make the necessary adjustment for it really is a piece of cake and you DO NOT need any help from the 485 arms or supports to do the job.

I played with installing and removing the 485 and the 3PH doesn't lift it high enough to engage the two locking pins. I see the adjustment but I've heard you can damage the 3PH if you adjust it too far so I'm reluctant to do it.
Right now I'm using the stabilizer arms to install the BH, takes me about 10 minutes to get it on this way.

I can see where pin 14 can be over extended and cause problems, also part 12 can hit the front of the housing if the adjustment is wrong.
