I recently bought a new 4540 Montana tractor. I have never owned a new tractor before. This thing is hands down much better than the Farmall H I have been using all these years. I am very pleased with it performance however there is a noticeable gear whine in mostly the 3rd and 4th gear. At first I checked all the fluids and they were fine. I have continue to use the tractor for a total of 17 hrs. now with no change in the noise, but am concerned. Is it common for these transmissions to make some gear noise?

Is it at road speed? Is it in 3rd ad 4th in high range when this is more noticable? If so a whine is not uncommon at higer speeds. I would have the dealer check it out just to be safe.

My tractor had a noticible noise in 4th gear also, I went to the dealer and listened the exact same noise in 4 other tractors and I also came to the conclusion that it was normal.

Same here on my 5740. Have the slight whine in 3rd and 4th gears. Also present in reverse, but more noticeable. Nothing I am worried about though.
