Mowing 4520 pto

my 4520 ran fine for the last 3 years and now warranty is up (4 months ago) now its time for brush hogging. wouldn't you know when the brush hog is raised pto works fine. then i lower the brushhog and start moving my pto stops.... why is that. the dealer wants 80 bucks an hour to trouble shoot. i pulled my cluch on the brush hog no problems there so it has to be my tractor. any ideas or waste 80 bucks

How much use has the tractor had with pto work? A better description would help too. Does the pto light or display remain on or does this turn off too? If the mower is lowered and turning does it fail in heavy grass or brush or simply anytime the tractor movement is engaged?

A service manual on CD is about $75 might be good to have, I need to remember to get one myself.:ashamed:

If the pto stops in heavy use it most likely is a slipping clutch, a good tech should be able to determine the problem in short order.

I would not consider the $80/hr to be a waste of money, everybody has to make a living. Understand how you feel though, I wouldn't want to see a pto failure this early either.

May be in one of the safety circuits, if I read right, the problem is the PTO cuts off when the machine starts to move, this being the case, I would look into the safety switches; there should be a section in the operators manual on how to check the safety switches that are on the machine. If you don't have or can't find the operators manual, there should be an online version on the JD website.
