4520 disk size ?

Im trading my 4520 hydro in on a 4520 power reverser tractor . im also looking at a new tufline disc in the deal . its the HL91624 pictured here Agriculture T4X & HL Series Tandem 3-point Disc - Monroe Tufline im looking at the 6.4 model HL series with 24 inch blades and scrapers it shows to weigh around 2000 pounds. and is rated at 60 to 100 hp . on paper im at the bare minimum . does anybody have any thoughts on being able to pull this disc with this tractor ? i will have r1 tires filled with water and can run it with the loader on it to add wieght .

I'm sorry I can't help you with the disc question, but why are you trading in your HST for PR? Do you mostly do field work? I ask because I may go from HST to PR as well and am curios what your thoughts are? Do you think you'll miss the HST?

well i do plow and disc about 2 acres every year once in the fall to turn the old crop under then again in the spring to plant . i loved my hydro tractor but i kept on having issues with john deeres load match feature . so since my tractors out of warranty ive decided to just get the gear tractor and be done with it . i will miss the hydro for the ease of use doing fel type work but after i get use to the PR trans i should be ok . and of course a grear tractor is always gonna be better for ground engagement type work . another thing is after using my farmall 100 this year to cultivate and disk it really made me appreciate how much power loss you have with a hydro tranny .

I have a 4700 JD with the power reverser. It works very well for me. I also have a McCormick C80L. The JD is of course a cat 1 while the C80L is a cat 2. The disk you are looking at is a cat 2, and has the size and weight to match. I have played with some of my cat 2 implements on the JD on occasion. I think full time use of such implements would create a lot of excessive wear and tear on the tractor. My suggestion would be to stay with cat 1 implements.

Not trying to dissuade you, but with my 4320 hydro I prefer that kinda weight to have wheels under it...

I think that is too much disk for the 4520 regardless of whether it is hydro or PR tranny. The 13.6 28 wheels just aren't big enough to provide enough traction.

I would find a different dealer to solve your loadmatch issues and consider either a smaller disk or better imo a Deere 681 tiller. I do alot of tilling each year with my 4520 and will say that you can pull a 681 deep (7 to 8 inches) at about 2.0 mph. Makes a nice even seed bed and works well with the ehydro, considering the tractor is holding the tiller from moving forward too fast the loadmatch shouldn't even be an issue. This would be a lot less strain on the tractor and would give you good results, something to consider.

Believe unless you are on really hard ground, you will have issue pulling this unit when it is running at a depth buried up to axles. I believe you would be better suited with the one right above it or closer to 1000 lbs or so with 20" blades.

The concern members are having for you revolves around hp between compacts and utility tractors not really being apples to apples. These machines are smaller and not built with as much ground engagement in mind. I ran into this issue trying to find a baler for mine...

I agree for the most part with the above. I think you would need more hp to properly utilize this disk though, need to be able to pull it fast enough to get good results. The compacts are not optimized for this type ground engagement, but are very good where the pto is used to achieve similar results. A 50 pto hp compact such as the 4520 can do a good job with a properly sized tiller. This enables you to get the hp to the ground via the pto driveline and for two acres is what I recommend, I do lots of this type work with my 673 tiller and know from experience that the 681 tiller would have been a better match.

I have a 4320 with the PR tranny. While your 4520 has a few more hp, the frame size is identical. I use a 8ft. Priefert disk with 24-20" blades. I'm not sure of the weight, but I'm sure it is substantially less than the disk you are looking at even though the Priefert is a heavy, well built disk. I have sufficient power in B2, but I could certainly use more power in B4 (around 5 mph) which is where I need to be to get the best results. This is all the disk my 4320 wants. In some situations, it really works the 4320. In fact, if I sink the disks to the axle, it is too much disk. If I were you, I would look for something no bigger than my Priefert.
