4520 disk size ?

I have a T4X (T4X972222B to be exact I believe).

I used to pull it with a 4700 (48hp) running R4s. Even in 4x4 mode, that was all the disk that tractor wanted, and if the ground was soft, there was no way to get up to 5mph.

I now pull it with my 85hp 5085M, and it does much better.

I think the HL will be too much disk for a 4520.

well i have gave some thought to a tiller but i use a disk for several other things that a tiller wouldnt work on . for example at the end of the season i disk all the corn stalks and other crops down then turn them under with the plow .

the disk you have is a 8 footer the one im looking at is only 6.4 . i wonder if that would make a difference ? im listening to all the advice and want to make the right decision . on the one hand i dont want more disk than i can use but on the other hand i dont want to buy a new disk and turn around and start adding wieght to it to get it to perform the way i want it to . the disk i was using was a 6ft adjustable gang disk but it wasnt but probably 800 or so pounds to get good results i always ran it with a cross tie and a 6ft railroad track on it . i never had no trouble with set up as far as pulling it goes.

Yes it will make a difference, and you can always lift it up a little with the 3pt to put more weight-traction on the rear tires and to lighten the cutting load of the disk.

well after ordering that disk and getting it to my dealers i took one look at it and new i made a mistake . it was so tall with the 24 inch blades that a 4520 couldnt lift it if it even has the capability to lift it . we ended up sending it back and ordering the TL43-72020
wich is a good bit smaller . it came in today and i believe its gonna work out it looks right size wise compared to the tractor. hopefully tommorow i can get some pics up of my tractor with the plow and the new disk up for you folks.

I have a JD 4610 and use a 10 ft IH 370 tandem disk I follow up with a 681 tiller in the garden. On large plots I smooth it out with a 14 ft do-all.

chevyman I noticed that you have Ag tires can they be spaced to straddle 1 or 2 30 inch rows. I have industrial tires and can't seem to get my spacing right.

well they only offer about 3 or 4 different settings for the back and only 2 for the front . im sure you can make it work for 1 30inch row but 2 im not so sure about . i will look at it tomorrow and try and get a idea .

That issue/question is the very reason I have went to single row planting and equipment. We used to have a two row planter and a specific tractor set up just for cultivating two rows. Problem came that the cultivating tractor was unreliable and we wound up selling it when I was a child. It was an old Allis Chalmers with the plows underneath. By going with the single row I have no issues swapping to another tractor if needed. My 5303 is bigger than needed for garden work, but works fine. Only draw back is the two row got more planted in smaller area. Since my planting is just for hobby and personal consumption and space isn't an issue, it works.
