What will you be using the tractor for and how much are you wanting to spend?
Any attachments on your "must have" list?

I went with the m6040 becuase of the 3pt lift capacity and the extra loader capacity (both of which I needed), but I also needed a tractor small enough to be pulled by a pickup. It fits that niche nicely.
If you are doing much yard/landscape type work, the smaller jd would be nicer for that.

hi all i have a 4520 now . i use the tractor to pull boats and to lift the i/o engines in and out. the boom that i use puts the j/d to the limit . i need a bit more on the hyd end . i tow boats to the river which is down hill so i need good brakes and when i return it,s all uphill so more pulling power can,t hurt
So are you asking whether you should upgrade to something such as the 6040 as an upgrade to your 4520? What kind of a slope is it? Dirt/gravel/paved? How large of boats are they?
From what your saying the 6040 wouldnt provide enough boost for an upgrade.

This isn't a real practical application for a compact tractor imo. I would consider a wheel loader or large forklift for this work. I would consider a one ton single wheel truck with a weighted bed and large motor and 4.00 + rear differential for towing.
If you still want a tractor for this type work consider an economy type 6140 Deere. This is a case for a high hp version for what ever frame size you settle on.
It takes lots of hp to pull a load up a long grade at a fast speed. This isn't what farm tractors are designed for, but some of the newer pickups and chassis cab trucks are perfect for this task.
