Here I am again asking questions about a tractor that is not mine. My step-father has a 4500 that the 4wd lever has been broken for several years. His fix was to manually put it in 4wd and leave it.
the engagement lever is sheered off clean with the case, leaving nothing to stick out to engage or disengage 4wd.
Now after several years it won't stay in 4wd. I have welded a small not on the sheered off shaft allowing me to engage and disengage the mechanism, but I suspect that there is play in the shaft that has allowed the splines to strip and therefore not engage 4wd.
Does this theory make sense? Is the shafte "easily" removable? how about the front spine coupler?
It appears as if the Shaft is about $300 and the spline is only $55 . AM125143 and M132456
I don't have the tractor in my possession. I am trying to research as much as I can before I go to work on it.
It appears as the philosophy is the when you engage 4wd that the entire shaft is pushed forward into the front housing... The best I can tell is there is a spring that pushes the shaft back when the lever is disengaged. there seems to be a fair amount of play in the shaft as you can slide it forward and back by hand - about 1/2"
advice / thoughts about this tractor or a similar tractor are appreciated.
