I asked him about the tire on the phone, he said he didn't know why it was like that. I suspect that that is the way the tire happened to be mounted when it was pulled off another machine or something like that. Apparently he has used it for a year like that. Thanks for the help guys. Hopefully it will be worth bringing home today. I looked at prices on tractorhouse and machine finder last night, seems like not a bad deal at 13800 unless it is really worn out. Hopefully it has just been left outside some and needs a little touch up paint and polish.

I wish you the best of luck...but if you have any hesitation about the tractor, don't buy it.
If any rust is just surface (use a philips screwdriver to probe a bit), I wouldn't be too concerned. After all, it is at least 5 years old, probably outside all that time and, as you wrote, near the coast (salt air).
Johndeere3720 went in to a lot more detail about things to check (reckon I assumed you were more familar with tractors) and those things should be checked.
How about the 4400 you'd written about? Still available?

I would be turned off by the fact it is a former rental. Sorry. Not enough of a great deal and I'd recommend you be really mechanical. These things can be torn up, especially in the hands of a renter.

While you're swapping the left tire around, you might want to consider a side to side swap (unless your wheels rims are adjustable) to widen the rear wheel track. That will give you more stability.
Also, don't forget those tires are directional and there should be an arrow on the sidewalls indicating the correct direction.

They mount the pivot tire reversed like that for sharp left-hand turns.

Hi guys,
For the $13,500 I paid I didn't expect it to be in perfect condition. I am pretty mechanical, made a living at it for 5 or 10 years. The main thing wrong with it is that most of the electrics don't work, no lights, turn signals etc. I'd think it will be a pretty minor issue but we will have to see. The only other thing I see wrong with it, beside that stupid tire, is a lot of weathering from being outside.
I was pretty anxious to get something, I've been looking for several months and oh, I have 20 yards of compost in a pile in my front yard. It has been making my back hurt just looking at it ever since I had it delivered 3 or 4 weeks ago. I planned on going and buying a 955 (for about half the money) that was missing a PTO shaft and no doubt some of the innards but he had just sold it so I致e really been looking hard. Went to the Deere store and took a look at a 2520 before I decided I壇 take the 4410. It is what I think I really need/want but I hate paying new prices, they wanted 16K for it with a 200cx, and then there would have been another grand for sales tax and I just can稚 stand to send much more money to politician. I guess I am more fortunate than a lot of you guys in that I could have driven off with a 25 or 2720 from the dealer without having to wait for it to come in. There seems to be a lot of demand for Deere 4WD hydros W/loaders around her, there have been several CL ads the last week or two, looking to take over payments or selling their 455 with loader so they could get the 4WD etc. I am probably more willing to take on something that will need a little work than most guys. I think the 4410 will do fine for the major landscaping I want to do on my wooded 2 acres. In the meantime I keep an eye out for that 20 or 30 series that has just a little of the new worn off.
If anyone has an idea about the lights, a fuse or circuit breaker or fuse link to go to that would be great.
The tire I think just needs to be replaced, it looks old and hard. I think the rears are already in the wide position if they have one but since you mentioned it Roy I was looking at the pictures and it looks like the fronts can be swapped for a wider track, am I correct?
The loader hydraulic lines have obviously been hitting the front tire until they bungeed them out of the way. The PO said it was because of the amour kit but I sure Deere had a better solution than the bungee, anyone know what is missing?
Speaking of the armor kit, should parts of it guarding the lines be held on with hose clamps? I didn稚 see any armor on the bottom but I may not know what I am looking for.

You can check the fuses and such. I hope that's all it is. All the other electrics work (gages, etc)?

Right off the bat, I strongly suggest you buy the Service Manual!! You're going to need it, I think. And, get the Deere manual....those aftermarket manuals suck. I hope the Operator's Manual came with tractor. That's still on the Deere website (not downloadable, but you can read it). Here's a link to it.
You did check all the hydraulics, PTO operation and such, right? You can get by without lights, but not the loader or PTO.

As far as the rear tire, "Old and hard" doesn't necessarily mean bad. Tractor tires have pretty stiff sidewalls, so you may be mistaking that for something else. Tires aren't cheap, by any means.

As far as swapping the fronts, there's controversy about that. The front axle does pivot at the centerline, so you won't see much improvement in stability. I did swap my fronts on my old 790 and there seemed to be an improvement...but that might have been more psychological then any thing else.
BTW, you wrote the rears were already as wide as they can go...it doesn't look like that in the first pictures you posted. It looks like those tires are still pretty close to the fenders (you should have 3.5 to 4 inches between the sidewall and fender...looks like you have an inch).

As far as the armor kit there should be a shield at the quick disconnects and another one, IIRC. Seems to me there was a skid pan too (under the engine).

Anyway, get the manuals (read the online manual while you're waiting), change all the fluids and filters.
