Hi everybody. I do not think this is a common problem with this tractor but I was mowing last week with the brushog and when I got finished I decided to scrape up some gravel from alongside of the driveway. Trimming up the yard with the tractor! Yes its great work around here and I love getting to use my tractor for it! I got off of the seat and noticed something wrong instantly. One is that I have always been able to use my tractor and get up from the seat minus when the pto is engaged. the tractor should had remained running as it normally would. I thought oh well it will start rite back up... I thought! Nope no start. put a jumper wire in the seat switch... no start...
something has either made the tractor think the pto is still running and wont allow it to restart or ??? Heck Im by no means an expert but I dont mind doing some R and R type of work but chasing some wires ohh boy!! Im not so sure on where to even start but this baby has switches jumping over switches and back to the seat again! I can make the tractor start with the old screwdriver trick against the starter wires but Im not looking to damage anything and would really like to be able to use the key! Does anybody have some ideas on were to start chasing the parts!!! I have checked the ignitions switch and the ignition relay and the fuel shutoff is working when I push down on the seat only. I think that the fuel shutoff should work all the time and not just when Im on the seat or not. like I said the tractor has always ran even when Im not seated unless the pto is egaged. Any ideas?

Two places I suggest looking, but you'll need a service manual to do the job:

PTO switch itself (this is not the Operator's Presence Switch under the seat).

If your 4310 has the HST transmission, there are potentiometers below the pedals. Seems like someone recently had a problem with these being dirty or out of adjustment, so search for "4310" and "potentiometer" using the TBN search. It might take some reading, so get a beer and get to it!

Do a search online here for a 4310 thermistor? Not sure if I'm spelling correctly. Its a cheap part, not sure what it does but it can keep you from starting.

Keep it from starting yes, but not cranking. Plus I believe only the 4x00 series has them-not the 4x10 series.

Like Roy, I suspect a switch somewhere, have a service manual would be invaluable. It's probably on or near either the MID or rear PTO levers. Have you every used JDParts?

You are right, I think they stopped using them on the '10s
