4310 tilt steering problem

The tilt on my steering wheel broke and is now flopping around. It kinda makes it tough to steer.Is there a temporary fix I can do until I get my fall service?

Also the dealer said it was on a fix as fail. But would not fix free of charge. Would it do any good to complain up the food chain?

The gear in the unit as I understand was a bad design, and JD issued a bulletin on it. In fact, I believe there were two redesigns

The plastic 'lock' on mine broke last summer, the result was my steering wheel could no longer be adjusted up or down, it's stuck in about the middle of the adjustment range, but is 'secure' in that position, it doesn't flop around. I bought a new 'lock' (~$10) and attempted to replace it myself and got everything apart just fine, but gave up as I could NOT get all the pieces to go back together properly. I got it all back together MINUS the 'lock'. Talked to one of the mechanics at my dealer, he said he never cussed in his life until he tried to reassemble the tilt-steering wheel on a 4310. There is no 'trick', it just requires a lot of patience and more hands than humans come with from the factory.
If your steering is flopping around, something is seriously wrong; the tilt design doesn't lend itself to that type of failure, it should be 'stuck' in a particular position and not move.

Maybe flopping around is an exaggeration. But it will not stay in one position. It's not the lock that's broke. It's the gear inside.

Does anyone know how to lock the steering in place temporarily. Any ideas would help.
