Yes this seems rather strange but Ive got about 800hrs on my tractor and love it. It does need a skid plate but the dealer cant get me one so now onto my next problem... the mid pto. I just got a mid mower as Ive usually only used the FEL and whatever attachments on the back. Now Ive got one last cutting for the year to do on my yard and Ive got a new mmm to do it with! After the install went super smoothly, I tried to engage the mower by the instructions, mid, then rear then they both should take offf...... nope nothing. tried the wrong way, rear works, mid, squeeeel dont do that! rear does work mid wont but I can make it skreech by doing it wrong but thats not the correct way, what gives? or were do I even start!

I cannot help you with your mid-PTO problem but will caution you about engaging the "wrong" way.
That can damage the rear PTO and we did have one TBN member do just that earlier this year.

As far as the skid plate...you can't buy the under armor kit anymore, but at least some of the components are available.

the skid plates not one of them I take it... I wonder who made that for them? or how it would be possible... whick components are avail?

The Mid-PTO is all gear driven from the rear...not much to go wrong. Where you sitting in the seat? Can you have someone check to see if the rear is spinning while the front is engaged?

One of our fellow TBNers, Arrabil, posted a link to one piece of the underarmor kit which is how know at least some of the components are available (but not as a kit). I'm not sure if a skid plate is part of the kit.
There's a Deere parts website you could look on but I don't have the link. You will have to register to use it.
Here's a link to an old TBN post:
http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/john-deere-owning-operating/3780-new-xtra-armor-kit-john.html.
This item "steel plate protects mid-mount hydraulic lines from ground obstacles" (quoted from the link) is the component I know about.

Another option (and probably no more expensive then Deere) is to find a local fabrication shop. You'll have to determine what the plate should cover (or maybe someone will post pics of the underarmor kit). 3/16ths or 1/4" steel sheet should be more then adequate.

BTW, since Kenny posted.... On my 4400, the mid-PTO knob must be engaged, then the rear-PTO lever engaged (in that order). I guess the first thing to check (after you follow Kenny's advice) is to ensure the mid-PTO knob linkage is actually hooked up.
I checked my mid-PTO to ensure it worked (when I bought the tractor) but I have no implements driven by the mid-PTO. Again, follow the sequence of engagement per your manual before you do any damage!

You sure about that sequence Roy?

yep i did it that way.... I engage the rear, it works. I engage the front then the rear, nothing. I go the wrong order and squelll as if things do work just not the correct order. Rear works. try mid then rear nothing. rear then mid, dont do that!lol thanks for the link Roy!

Thank JD755 for pointing out my mistake (well, I'll do that for you!), as well as KennyD's insight (Heck, I'll thank him too!!).

I would look to the seat switch. When I have trouble with my 4310 usually a quick bounce up and down and I am mowing.

I need to retract this statement a little. I was going by memory and thinking it was the same setup as the 4x00 series that uses no electrics for the mid-PTO. It seams that the 4x10's uses a much more complicated system to engage the mid-PTO. It appears it is electro-hydraulicly activated. It looks like the place to start is checking voltage at the solenoid valve (#42). It may also be corroded/seized since you have not used it at all in 800 hours. This might be a good time to get a service manual;)

yep a service manual would be handy....

If it were the seat switch, the rear wouldnt come on would it? but then if it were the solenoid, it wouldnt make the screeching sound when the rear is already turning I wouldnt think. Nothing spins when the proper sequence is followed!

As kennyd pointed out, the solonoid has a connector (2 wires) running to it, and on my 4300 I ripped off those wires while using the tractor in the woods. So my mid pto doesn't work, but everything else works just fine (will screach when wrong order attempted).
Might be a good place to look.

And in lieu of a service manual, take a look at your mid pto on jdparts (see the schematics and parts list such as kennyd posted. You will be able to see the wiring harness etc. there as well.

It would take me a while to trace through the logic for the PTO, but for now here is the schematic.

To add to JD755's post, here is a pic of the mid pto on the 4310 that shows the solenoid, and the brief trouble-shooting guide (from the tech manual).

I want to say thank you so much for all the helpful insight! My wires underneath the tractor were connected into the wrong places and everything works like a champ now! you guys are great!

I'm glad to hear you are up and running. I was just on my tractor bringing in logs and thought about your problem 'n wondering how you were doing.

Now, you have my curiosity up...where are the "wrong" places they could have been connected?

Great job, Rahrah!!!!!!!
