425 Starting Problem

Well I need to thank you guys. And you don't even know that you helped!

Just had the same problem, started pt up and let it warm up for 5 minutes, changed from plow to lmb and drove about 100 feet and it died. Nothing happened when key turned.

Did all the basics, made sure pto off, that I had gas, that battery was charged, nothing loose. Then came back and reviewed posts between mutters under my breath.

In my case the fuse looked ok but I pulled it anyway to get a close look at it. Put it back in and machine started right up.

So I either had a fuse that got a little loose or the fuse holder looks like it pinches the wire to make the connection. Could be that the pinch was not quite complete and so did not connect properly. I did give it a little squeeze just in case.

Will call Terry monday just to make sure it's nothing else. Ever notice how these problems always happen on the weekend!

I think you should replace that fuse holder with a heave duty auto type fuse holder and fuse. They have those new fuses that glow when they blow. Must be a tiny light in there. You can find them at Auto Zone.

The fuse holders have "insulation displacement" connections to the wire. There is a slot which the wire is pushed sideways into and that cuts into the insulation and makes contact with a bit of the wire. This is actualy inside the fuse holder plastic. They use these on trailers and they are IMHO a terrible concept. I call them devil contacts. They give you an easy short term fix. I would go ahead and replace the other fuse holder on the cooling fan near the temperature switch.
