Well, I've all but decided to get the JD4200 & i thought I'd get some feedback on the prices I've been quoted by the nearest dealer:

4200 (4WD, HST, mid PTO): $15,800
420 loader w/ 61" heavy duty bucket: $2,700
60" mid mount mower: $2,150
3rd selective control valve: $300
Model 45 rear blade: $450

The other day when I stopped by I said I was still thinking of the Kubota B2910 also (which I am), but that it was significantly cheaper. I aked whether his prioce was already rock bottom. He said yes.

Then today he called me to see whether I had made up my mind. I said no (which is true) & that I was still struggling with the price. I thought he might be willing to budge. But he didn't bit e at all.

So, how good are the prices he gave me? Should I be visiting other JD dealers (all are at least 20 miles further away)?

I bought similar equipment two years ago in Mid-Michigan. I paid significantly less than that, but, that was two years ago and I know the price has gone up. Local dealer (Lich) was much better than the dealers elsewhere south and east. I would keep shopping for a better price on that Deere.

I bought a 4300 HST, with 430 fel, large heavy duty bucket, 3rd valve, mid pto, R4, telescoping links, and a few more goodies for !9,100. If I am reading your numbers correctly you would be paying 18,800 for the 4200 with less equipment.

I ended up buying from the nearest dealer but he was also the most helpful. I did get two lower prices from other dealers but I just did not feel as comfortable with them. It was not worth it to me to cut out the best dealer for $200.

Get on the phone and cold call the dealers rather than driving. Tell them you are ready to buy and are looking for the best price. Give them your equipment needs and get bids. Take that info to the nearest dealer and see if he will meet the price or at least come close. If not, now is the time to work up the bid list until you find the best price at an acceptable dealership.

This has always worked for me. I do not know why but I usually get a better price on the phone.

Good Luck

Yikes. How long ago did you purchase it & where do you live?

I called 2 other dealers so far. One quoted me several hundred dollars higher. The other will fax a quote to me tomorrow. I will also be calling the other 2 dealers that are within 25 miles of me.

In another post John Miller posted a couple of links for the 4200 with prices. The dealer was selling the 4200, Hydro with Bar Tires for $14k even.

Your price for the tractor alone was $1800 higher.

Yep & I'm having no luck improving on that price. Here is what I was quoted:

4200 (4WD, HST, mid PTO): $15,800
420 loader w/ 61" heavy duty bucket: $2,700
60" mid mount mower: $2,150
3rd selective control valve: $300
Model 45 rear blade: $450
Total: $21,400

I have called 4 other dealers within a 25 mile radius. I'm still waiting for one quote to be faxed, but the other 3 have already responded. All of their quotes are withint $300 of the original quote.

This is discouraging. I can widen my search a little bit farther, but after that the distance is too greatto be practical for servicing.

Any other thoughts?

The Kubota B2910 is starting to look more appealing all of the time ...

On the 2910, I'd highly recommend the 72" deck over the 60". Cuts faster, closer, tighter circles and is easier to remove. I'd get the 72" on the Deere also, although it is more difficult to remove than the Deere 60"--both of which are more difficult than the Kubota 72".

I bought the tractor in June this year. What got the Deere dealers off the usual price quoting was that I let them know that I had stopped in to see the fellows in N.C. that sell and ship the Kabotas. I spent several months talking to salesman and pushing on the price. Sometimes you just have to say that this is all I am going to pay and see what happens. In my case my first choice dealer got tired of talking to me and dropped the price $500 dollars. He sold the tractor. Everytime I see him he tells me I still hold the record for the longest time between first visit and the sale. I asked for prices on some attachments just the other day and his first price was 10% lower that anyone else. He may just take the fun out buying stuff. Jane and I live in Upstate New York South of Rochester and we have several Deere dealers in the region. Competition is wonderful.

The warranty is provided by Deere, not the dealer. Buy from whomever you like, the dealer of your choice (say, the closest) will do the warranty work.
