In large part because of this forum & the sage advice it has, I will be going to my dealer tomorrow to finalize the purchase of a 4110 w/FEL, BB, MMM. After reading the "4410 Battery Leakage" thread, I wondered if the problem occurs with 4110s also.

I discussed this with the dealer. He played dumb about the problem, but said he would credit $50 for the standard battery & install an Optima if I brought one in. Soooo, should I replace the battery with an Optima D51??? If so, where is the best place to buy one?

Thanks -- you guys are invaluable!

My 4110 has 30 hours and I have not detected any leak yet. I'm just waiting for it to happen. I will switch to the Optima D51 at the first sign (maybe sooner). I would take your dealer up on the credit/install offer.

Search for "D51" and you will see some threads with a link to an online store with the Optima batteries at a reasonable price.

Congrats on choosing the 4110. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I haven't seen the problem either, but I would take the dealer up on his offer anyway. Why not? It's relatively cheap peace of mind.

After just gonig through this on my 790, I would definitely take the dealer up on his offer.
Here is a link to Remy Battery I have not done business with them myself, but have read good things from others here on the forum.

I just went with the orbital that was on sale for 119 its specs compare to the Yellow top optima. From the reviews I've read people are liking them a lot. you can order online from here..

I would take the dealer up on the offer, because it will leak on the 4110. It did on my 4100 (same machine basically)...do it once and never think about it again. Plus the dealer is giving some offset /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I can't think of a better way to get started, get the Optima. Sounds like your dealer is pretty super! Good job! Autozone has the D51, but you can't beat Remy....

Do it! I detected leakage on my 4110 around the 100 hr. mark. I caught it in time, before any real damage, and replaced it with a 51R Optima. Remy had the best price at the time.

Correction, that's a D51 , not D51R, sorry for the confusion.

Lotek: I have a 4300 , 2000 model and haven't experienced any battery problems though I keep looking every month. It seems to be a hit or miss. My guess is that most of the batteries are fine. You might be paying good money for nothing. It is warranted 2 years and because of the problems some owners have had it seems that JD will have to pony up for a bit longer if people experience these problems.

DO IT!!!!

I also have a 2000 4300 and did have some leakage though not the destruction that others have had. Luckily Stuart has not had a problem. I actually just finished pulling out the front metal plates that support the battery. I then wire wheeled them, chemically removed the rust. and painted with good paint...hope it works.

I also have a yellow top Optima. I had to fabricate a hold down angle but that was no trouble...happy to send a pic if ya want. Make the change now and prevent the problem.

This is also not just a JD problem, it happens to all.

<font color="green">Stuart, is your tractor used on level ground or pretty much level ground? I have been wondering if the tractor battery acid problems might be more prevalent for those who use their tractors on hills and in hollows, like me.

Or bumpy ground mowing at high heat...

I never thought I had a problem, either, then I puuled tha battery out, and all the damage was hidden by the battery!

The Optima D51 is available at Remy for under $100. The dealer will credit $50 for the stock battery. Based on my experience, and many others posted here, $50 is cheap insurance, and money well spent.
The hold-down hardware on the 4110 fits the Optima perfectly. No modification or fabrication is necessary.

I do use mine on hilly and very rough areas...maybe thats why I had the problem a bit. And glad to hear the 4110 needs no mod to fit the optima. Th 4300 has small plates that held the lower edge of the old battery. The optima doesn't have this edge to grab...needed a top strap.
I just feel bettter with the optima....now if I can just fix those rollback cylinders...hmmm

On the 4110, be cautious torque-ing the "plastic" hold-down bar. Mine snapped with what seemed like a pretty light tightening. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Thanks for the input guys. Great news that the Optima D51 will fit the 4110 without mods! I ordered one from Remy & it should arrive before the tractor does next Thursday, so I can get it to the dealer for swap out & installation. So far, my dealer & salesman have been GREAT, and I got 3 hats when I finalized the deal - must be my baby blues. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif If I can just stay busy & distracted until Thursday...

BTW, my salesman said there's a big JD meeting in FL the week of 10/25 re the new models. Hmmmm, just in time for the Christmas buying spree???

My 4210 has 219 hours on it, and I serviced it at 200 hours. As I always do while servicing, I remove the side panels and tilt the front grille out, and clean the debris out of the engine compartment. To clean the hydro radiator, I loosen the battery hold down and pull it forward, and this time I found white deposits crusted onto the radiator that were pretty much concealed by the battery. I took some pics of the area before cleaning the deposits off and reinstalling the battery.

Next service will be at 240 hours, and I am wondering if the problem will recur, so I priced the Optima batteries at a local auto parts retailer (Murrays) and the red top has a much better warranty than the yellow top model does. Would anyone know why the warranties are so different? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

mhalla: yes my tractor is used mostly on level ground. I have a couple of hills but no valleys or hollows to speak of. Do you think that battery leakage is caused by or related to the type of ground the tractor is used on?
