Did you try pouring cold water on the warm (non-turning) inj pump before attempting an operating temp of engine start to see if it would start quicker????????

Used the tractor a good bit this morning putting hay out. I worked it a good bit harder than I had to on purpose. Got back and shut it off and it would not start back as usual. Got the water hose and ran water over the pump for about 30 seconds and it fired right back up. I guess. That means the injector pump is worn out right?

Personally, I don't recommend puting cold water on a hot injection pump whether it is running or not. The injection pump parts run on a very tight tolerance. If the pump is hot and all parts are expanded due to heat, when you put cold water on it, The outer housing will contract from the cold and could cause the internal rotating parts to "seize". This can cause injection pump driveshaft to twist off and ruin the pump.

I've personally never witnessed an inj pump seized from putting cold water on a "non-turning" inj pump.

Now I have a question for you. How would you go about diagnosing that the head/rotor have too much clearance to distribute the fuel for cranking in the operating temp mode without putting water on pump????

The pouring water on the pump because I had only read about it and had also read about bad things happening with water pouring on it I didn't post about trouble shooting it.

Txjim, I have always just observed lack of smoke from exhaust while cranking. You also can connect injector to fuel line on outside of engine and observe while cranking. You know fuel is being delivered while cold, and if no fuel is delivered when hot, head and rotor are worn. I also have never witnessed a pump seizure when not turning, but I don't feel it is worth the risk of damaging a possibly good pump.
