4000 hd industrial

Hi everyone,
i am in the process of buying an old 4000 hd industrial tractor. i got it running well by changing the points and coil. the hydraulics dont work. is there a lever to engage them or possibly the fluid is very low. Also on top of the tranny,dead center under the steering wheel is what looks like a brights switch from the older cars. What is this for? Dan

sounds like you have a 'previous model'

the big thumb switch on the top of the trans is the STARTER button. it provides ground for the starter solenoid, and only when the trans is in neutral.

which hyds don't work? 3pt lift.. or aux hyds ??? be a lil more specific please.

also.. have you checked he oil in the hyds sump?

post a pic if you can.

does the machine you are looking at have the heavy cast front nose, and a soldid non adjustable front axle?

GOT THE HYDRAULICS WORKING. NEEDED 5 GALLONS OF FLUID. HAS NO 3 PT.HITCH. HAS A BACKHOE IN THE REAR. HAS A DRIVESHAFT TYPE POWER TAKEOFF IN THE FRONT. IT DOES HAVE A LEVER ON THE LEFT SIDE OF TRANSMISSION. ASSUME IT IS FOR HIGH AND LOW RANGE. I ORDERED A SERVICE MANUAL FOR IT SO I'LL KNOW ALL ABOUT IT PRETTY SOON.

HERES A PIC OF THE LEVER. I THINK ITS FOR HIGH AND LOW RANGE. ALSO,
THE SHIFTER HAS MARKINGS EMBOSSED ON: TOP OF THE TRANNY HOUSING RIGHT UNDER THE SHIFTER. IT'S MARKED R ON LEFT FRONT. 1 ON FRONT RIGHT.
2 ON BACK LEFT AND 3 ON BACK RIGHT. REVERSE WORKS FINE BUT WHEN I PUT
IT INTO 1ST IT SEEMS TO BE A VERY HIGH GEAR. PUTTING IT INTO SECOND
FEELS LIKE 1ST AND CANT EVEN FIND 3RD GEAR. THERE IS NO PLACE TO ENGAGE THIRD. TRIED HOLDING BACK ON SHIFTER AND FEATHERING CLUTCH TO MAKE IT GRIND IN BUT NOTHING THERE. WEIRD. DAN :thumbsup:
