4 wheel drive problem

4wheel drive won’t function.
Drive train locks up when 4WD is engaged. Operates normally in 2WD.
Kunitz 5000MX DT (manual transmission).

What are you doing when it locks up?

Tractor 4wd should not be used on concrete or hardpack in high range (some tractor manuals say at all or list a distance)

The reason for this is that you windup your drivetrain and it will lock up or break - the two different tire sizes travel at slightly different rates, so your differentials rotations get further apart the the longer it goes. This feeds back to your transmission via the pto/drive shafts, once you have used up all your gear slip and system tolerances you will start having unwanted things happen.

I was in high range on asphalt road. I placed it in 2 wheel drive before leaving my home, but possibly it was not fully disengaged. I really didn’t feel the 4 wheel drive interference on the turns,etc.

Probably need to jack up the frontend, and disconnect the front drive/output shaft. That should allow you to determine what is not behaving.

Try turning your elevated wheels by hand, feeling for damage, then try driving the front axle (via the shaft) by hand.

If that all checks out, leave your front shaft off, put ypur wheels back on the ground and try to drive with 4wd engaged (hopefully nothing comes of that as damage is possibly in your transmission if it does and that usually means a split).
