I have to doubt the accuracy of a BTU ratings list for anything that rates Red Oak, Sugar Maple, and White Oak the same. White Oak has significantly more BTUs than Red Oak, with Sugar Maple somewhere in between.

One of the better lists I've found was done by Chimney Sweep Online. Unforunately, it seems to have disappeared from the web. I did save a copy, however (see attached file)

Thanks John
I burn mostly red oak but I do find the white better. Sugar maple I hardly burn but around here we'd call some maple "rock maple" or even "furniture maple". I don't know what the correct species name for this local vernacular is but I have built furniture with the "furniture maple" and it is quite dense.

I’m going to suggest my least favorite 4-letter word - RENT.

Try out all kinds of units until you find your favorite. Let the shop maintain it and store it. $2000 budget will last you 10 years worth of rentals.
