Tractor
John Deere 4720 Cab
I've been using the 3720 for about two weeks now and continue to be amazed at the power of this tractor. As some of you may know, I sold my 4720 with the factory cab because I needed a smaller tractor without the cab.

I am curious as to what you folks are seeing with the maximum travel speed in Range C. I have the larger 44" industrial tires and according to the operator's manual it should do 18.2 mph at 2600 rpm. The best I can do is 16.8 mph at 2700 rpm without any load other than the weight of the loader

16.8 mph is moving right along for a mid size compact tractor but wanted to know what the rest of you are seeing. The tractor is actually faster than the 4720. The 4720 would run about 15.8 on level ground (industrial tires).

Perhaps the operator's manual is wrong but would appreciate if my speed is normal.

How are you measuring your speed?

Ive got my dads 3720 up to 16 mph as well (i used the mph meter on dash computer) but still had the weight of the FEL. The FEL adds quite a bit of extra weight so you wont go near as fast with it than without it. I did it on the road with R4 tires.

I'm using the digital speedometer on the dash. I trust its programmed at the factory for the larger R4 tires. I wonder how one would know if has or not.

I don't think they change anything on the speedometer due to the tire treads. my dads 3720 originally had R1 tires on it and he opted for small R4s. All the dealer did was install the FEL and fill the tank with Diesel.

I was thinking that since the tractor was ordered with the larger R4 industrial tires that the computer was set for the specific size at the factory. I know the computer on a car/truck has to be reset if you change wheel/tire size to get an accurate speed reading. One would assume that the computer is set one way for 18" tires and one way for 20" tires.

Tractors may not have the same ability perhaps. Maybe I should gps it and see what it does.

The tire size can and should be changed in the electronic display. They are set in locations 02xx and 03xx. The default is 2972mm (the circumference), so it should read 0229 and 0372. The technical manual explains how to figure and set the measurement.

My 3320 would go 17.5 before I put Rim Guard in all 4 tires. Now the best it does is 17 once it is warmed up. When real cold outside it takes a while to get up to full speed.

My 3720 also does about 17.5 topspeed. I have R4s on and calcium in the rears. I know with a 500 lb culvert in the FEL, 13 is about as fast as I want to go as it is pretty squirrely above that!

After you get some time on the 3720, I'd be interested a good thread comparing the 2 in different situations. Did you trade in the 4720?
