2006 John Deere 3720
I changed my oil and filter yesterday and that seemed to go fine. I did have a question about the oil capacity for a 3720. The online manual says 6 quarts, and my question is: is that the bare minimum or is that to the top of the fill line?

Also, does anyone know the 'spread' on the dipstick? Is that a 1 quart difference from top to bottom line? Half quart?

I spilled about a cup filling it up and don't want to start it up without the right amount of oil and also don't want to over fill. I was thinking of adding about a couple of pours from a quart of oil; but the mosquitos were in full force and I left that for this evening project. I didn't start the machine and let it idle because of the oil and mosquito issue.

The drain plugs are 17 mm in case anyone is wondering.

I would not worry about a cup of oil . Start it up let it build oil pressure and then check the level after it has filled the oil filter. You might want to fill the filter 1/2 full with oil and screw it on really quick. It will help get oil pressure faster. In case you are wondering I always repace the oil filter when I change the oil.

LOL....Are you crazy? I'd rather blow snow year around then deal with mosquitos for one day....
Mosquitos are pratically the official Maine state bird...they get big enough to be....:D

Thanks for the replies. I usually half fill the oil filter when doing a filter change. I always change the filter on everything. They are cheap, oil is cheap also compared to repairs. I have a sight glass on my motorcycle, I kind of wish they had one on tractors. Makes it real easy to check oil level.

It is a bit chilly here in south Louisiana, but will get to 80 for a high. Cold front tonight, not sure what it will be, but I sleep with my window open when it is chilly. I am all for free air conditioning. It actually snowed here this year. About 3 inches i'd guess on top of my airconditioner. Supposedly it snowed in '88 or '89 but I don't remember it. Last time is snowed of any consequence was about '73 or '74. I don't remember it, (3 or 4 years old) but I have pictures of me building a snow man type thing.
