3540 Hydraulic leak

It's not always the 4X4 seal. The HST input shaft and housing can leak also into the clutch.

True, its not ALWAYS anything.... Lots of things on these tractors that can leak. But then we were talking about my particular leak weren't we.

What year is your L3540? Also, do you have any info on the repair kit, like a part number? Thanks!

I believe my tractor is a 2007 model

Just got the invoice on this. it says (not sure if it is a Kubota part number sorry
Item: TD060-98002

I see it says "GST" which is a Glideshift trans , Mine is not a Glideshift but a HST trans. Hope this helps., Oh the kit was $51.84

I just took my L3540 in last week for a leak at the split pin. I've been aware of this issue for a couple of years now. Mine just started to leak about a month ago. I only have 375 hrs on mine and was getting ready to change the hydraulic fluid for my HST and noticed the drip from the split pin. Dealer called me today to tell me the leak is from the tranny side and the tractor will need to be split. 10 to 12 hrs of labor at $69/hr. I told them I expected it and to go ahead and replace any other seals in there while they had it open. They mentioned I already had the updated seal on the transmission which I found curious. Apparently the updated Kubota seal doesn't fix the problem?
Background - I bought this tractor used. I believe it's a 2007 year model so that's pretty close to the first year of the 3540. As you can see, I don't put too many hrs on the tractor, but I do like the machine for it's utility when I need it. I also don't run it in 4 wheel drive unnecessarily specifically to avoid any strain on the seals to lessen to possibility of a leak starting up. So much for that cautious approach. We'll see how this goes...

The drivetrain will spin as many times in 4wd as in 2wd. I could see less wear on bearings or gears, but not really on the seals from running unloaded.

Sounds like the same issue on the same year tractor, maybe a second opinion is warrented?

I would probably think the same, but this dealer's workshop isn't about to dive into my tractor to drive up their workload for shop income. They have plenty of valid work to do, to include new tractor sales prep. They move a lot of equipment. I'll relay exactly what they replaced on the invoice when I get it back. I want to make sure I'm correctly explaining what seal they are replacing. I'm just hoping this fix will last longer then the 375 hrs this one lasted.

I've got like 1100 or so hours on mine now, I bought it used with 320.

On my 2012 there was an updated seal for the HST input shaft. The new seal was double lipped and the one I removed was a single lipped design. Also the seal housing has been updated to a heavier design. The price for the parts was relatively cheap.

My tractor is now repaired. I was about to change the HST hydraulic fluid and filters anyway so the timing worked out when they split the tractor and had to remove the fluid. Here's a copy of the invoice showing parts used. I already compared Hunt's seal kit number to my invoice, it's not on there.
I believe my leak was on the transmission side. When the service rep called me stating they had to split the tractor, he stated my tractor already had that updated seal. Hopefully, this will solve the problem for many thousands of hours into the future.
