Hey guys,
I just finished putting my 316 back together today. It was almost a complete redo. The engine short block and transmission were left alone. Other than that, every gasket, bearing, seal, bolt, hose, decal (except the deck ones) and most everything electrical was replaced. Couple pics of just how bad it was.
I never took a picture before I started tearing it apart! Too anxious I guess.
The seat is a mess, hence the cover. I going to try and fit my stock 2520 seat to it. I went one size up on the front tires.I think they are going to have to grow on me though. A friend at work painted the seat pan, side covers and hood. I spray bombed everything else.
Anyway comments welcome.:)

That's great!! I would love (and I mean really love) to find a 318 to buy that require minimal restoration. My parents' neighbor has one, but he ain't selling.

I also would consider your 316 if your selling. BTW, I really like the agri-rib front tires. They really enhance the look of the machine.

Thanks for the compliment John. I stated the front tires would have to grow on me. I like them more each day.:)
I had an old Speedex tractor that I used to cut the grass around the house (low branched fruit trees) where the ROPS of the 2520 would interfere. I also used it with my Trac Vac lawn vac in the fall. Parts for that thing were far to none,so I sold it and decided to get an older JD,hence the 316. What started out to be fixing one oil leak and a couple hydraulic lines ended up with what is pictured. I never intended to go that far,but glad I did.:)
I guess what I'm saying is,it's not for sale at this time.

BTW,I have a sister that lives in Carowinds.

nice job. what yr is that 316 and also you were able to get parts for the motor? was it an onan? just curious because i have an 89 316 and at 1200+ hrs shes starting to burn a touch of oil. and i was told you can't get motor parts for the onans anymore.

Hi farmerjim,
My 316 is a 1986 with the P218G Onan. I didn't fool with the bottom end of the engine. A little over 1000 hrs and she's still pretty strong.
I see the statement "you can't get parts for Onans anymore" alot. It is so untrue. You still can get pretty much everything for these engines, new or used.
Best place I found is Onans own site: Onanparts.com, Your Onan Parts Solution.

thanks for the info glc. the 300 series jd lawn/gardens are pretty much bulletproof. my grandpa had a 314 w/ a kohler great tractor not so great motor because it was a single after that he got a 318 which my dad now has, my uncle also has a 318 which he just put a briggs into the old onan had a bad knock in the lower end it had about 2k hrs on it. i needed some parts for my old baler while at the dealer ,just asked what was comparable to my 316 and to get something new it would be around $8k, i think the model was the x7??. imo i don't think it would be as good as what i have now.

What a nice job you did with this renovation. Now, you need to go on e-Bay and buy yourself a nice new seat. Thank you for sharing these pictures.:)
