3038 hydro PROBLEM?

I am going to agree with all those that stated, "too much weight forward while going downhill." What happened is normal. When you were going downhill, with weight forward, the rear got light. The opposite tire rotation was what an open diff does when you loose traction with both tires. Basically you were in an upset condition. I;m glad you regained control, that could have been nasty!

Solutions...

1. Remove grapple (remove weight not needed, improves weight transfer and reduces stress on loader/tractor)
2. Travel uphill, not downhill (weight transfer will be to your advantage, safer too)
3. Engage 4WD (always a good idea in steep terrain, especially if going downhill)
4. Use difflock (probably would not have helped, rear tires were off the ground)

Good luck and be safe!

Whenever I go mowing down a hill with my tractor first thing I always do is put it into low range. I have always found much better control of my tractors by letting the tires roll slowly and have my gears or hydro hold the tractor back from running away than I ever have had with using the brakes.

Hydros are a little more tricky getting the wheels to unlock in a slide than a gear. With gears you can just let the brakes off a second and get the tires to unlock and then reapply pressure. Sometimes with hydros you actually have to depress the pedal to get the wheels rolling again.

It feels completely contrary to what you would want to do when in an uncontrolled slide by depressing the pedal but having the wheels locked up gives you absolutely zero ability to steer out of your skid.

Run the hill without the grapple, In low gear and on dry grass and take it slow. Best case is always to run the tractor up the hill.

Your tractor doesn't have brakes on the front wheels (almost none do). If you're in 2WD, and step on the brakes while going downhill, all that will happen is the rear tires will slide, and you've seen what the result is. Remove the grapple and you shouldn't have that problem next time.

Same thing happens with my 3038H, slide while going down hills if I am in mid or high range. If I am in low range the tractor will stop and hold right in middle of steep grade without brakes just by taking foot of the fun peddle.
