John Deere 3020
I have a 1967 John Deere 3020 (diesel) that for some reason will not start! It ran great yesterday when I switched it off! Today I go back to start it up and it will not start! I thought the batteries were bad so I put 2 new ones in it and it still won’t start! It seems that the engine is under a strain or the starter is not turning it over fast enough to start! I put new heavy duty battery cables on it and still no luck! I’m wondering if the engine is hydro-locked or if the starter is just too weak to spin it over! ANY comments or hep would veritable appreciated!!

From the looks of the starter I'd say it's time to replace it. You should also fix those oil leaks and clean up the wiring harness before they start giving you trouble.

Welcome to TBN
I cleaned the dust from my Crystal ball but still failed to see photo of JPColes tractor.

My guess is hyd pump is attempting to build pressure during engine starting process. While engaging starter try rapidly moving steering from side to side. Moving steering wheel helps relieve hyd pressure. JD offers a manual or electric hyd pump destroking screw that will accomplish the same thing.

Thanks....LOL...I haven’t attached any pictures! However I did try to rock the steering wheel rapidly while TRYING to turn the engine! That didn’t seem to do any good either! I did notice that the engine oil was really thin looking so I’m thinking I may have bigger problems. I switched out the small fuel pump on the side of the engine about a year ago because the dioapram was bad and it was leaking fuel into the oil! NOW I’m wondering if the injector pump is leaking as well! The oil has a faint smell of diesel too and really runny! I’m gonna change the oil and filter again just to make sure that it’s clean! I’m thinking that oil may be sitting on top of the pistons causing it to load up and not turn over! I would really like to be able to see if there is but not quite sure how to do that since it don’t have spark plugs to pull out and check it like that! Any advice would be helpful

Not sure how you actually saw the starter...as I didn’t post any pictures of it! You must be referring to someone else’s post!

Simplest method for relieving any fluid that might be on top of pistons is by removing injectors. 1967 3020 will have pencil type injectors which are easier to remove than the older style injectors. I'll advise you change engine oil before attempting to start engine again or you might end up similar to my neighbor with metal shavings in engine oil pan.

I was thinking about your 3020 not starting. Before you loosen lines on injectors try loosening the 2 screws on timing widow on inj pump. If rubber gasket is stuck to IP housing pry it loose so fuel leaks out. Now attempt to start engine. If engine starts then fuel return line or check valve in IP is clogged. I seriously doubt any substantial amount of fluid is on top of the pistons

On subject of engine turning over slowly I've utilized a pickup truck battery attached on each side for jump start to give 24 volt system more UMP. Always attach +to+ & -to- on battery terminals making sure pickup body isn't making contact with tractor

Does the starter turn over the engine. If it does not check the starter to make sure it is all okay. If it is don’t try and start the engine. Remove all the injectors and then roll over to expel any fluid. Then figure where the fluid is coming from and fix that.

If there is fluid lock and the engine starts it can cause serious damage.
