I've not looked into it much, but my initial reaction/concern with the plastic sleeves I've seen used on pole barn posts is if water gets inside the sleeve it'll definitely keep moisture around the wood, whereas at least soil will drain/dry out eventually.

Exactly, post sleeves never really made any sense to me. They are just a place for water to stay forever, vs a nice sandy well-draining backfill around the posts that will shed it.

I've looked into the sleeves, but I could not get to the buy point from the information on the various maker's websites.

The argument that the sleeve makers generally make is that the sleeve allows water to drain to the bottom quickly, and the post does not stay as wet as soil contact. They also claim that there is less fungal and insect intrusion. But no data.

I do notice that almost all of the pressure treated posts here that rotted out, rotted out only from the ground down 12-15". So while I am skeptical of the sleeve maker's claims, their zone of protection lines up with where our posts have had issues.

Roadside power poles here last couple years have all gotten a fungus and wrap treatment. They've been in the ground for 30yrs. The crew digs down, wrap the post, drill two holes at ground level, injects fungicide, caps the holes then backfills.

That is a nice build. Experience does make a difference. I hauled pole barn materials for a builder that had ten to maybe fourteen crews. The larger builds took more than one trip so I could see the progress. You look at enough buildings, you can easily pick up out little things. That and the speed of the build.

That was back around 2005. That company had a Perma-column franchise with their own batch plant to make them. At that time, it would add about 25% to the cost of a build.

Ours get them about every four or five years here. The fungal treatment is a copper based material. Last time they were Heer, we got to chatting and they mentioned the oldest pole that they had serviced was from 1909, and still in great shape.
