2009 ct225 bobcat
Hi, I'm new to this site & tractor ownership.

I bought a bobcat ct225, with FEL, and have a used farm king blower - I only have 9 hrs on it, really like it so far.

I want to get a 3 pt tiller. The local Home of Economy sells king kutter brand 60" for $1300.00 Or I can get a 63" Northern tool & equipment tiller for $1099

Will be using to till existing garden, pumpkin patch, and deer food plots. Yes I'd probably be tempted to expand (break new ground) around all three area's.

Any advise, thanks in advance.

from what I've read, the KK's are good value. The CCM's are also good. bjr

I ended up getting a Kuhn 58" tiller for my B7800. 1900 delivered.

Yup could have got something cheaper over the net, delivered by truck. My thoughts were that I should probably get something from a local dealer so that I have access to good spares and parts supply for something that takes that kind of abuse in use.

I might be wrong and the sub 1K tillers out there from china etc on the net might have been very much good enough for my use, but I played it on the safe side.

What ever you decide, you need to be happy and satisfied with your choices.

Cheers

The tiller I was looking at did not say king kutter II on the tiller itself, I don't think it was gear drive? center style hub with oil bath onto a chain, I think. It doesn't look as beefy as the one pictured in the Northern link above. I also found the same tiller(KK) at Tractor Supply for about the same price TC @ $1370.00 Home of Economy @ $1349.00 + taxes, of course. I live about 85 miles from the 2 stores I mentioned above.

But that is the exact tiller I was looking at in the Northern catalog for the $1099.00 There is a Northern Store about 160 miles from where I live so I wouldn't have to pay shipping.

Watch out for Northern, as they have a lot of Chinese knock-offs of other brands. They are good at disguising where they are made. They look real, but are not. Just be cautious.

Do you have other tractor brands dealers near you other then bobcat ? Sometimes you can find a better deal for a heavier duty type of tiller for same or less money. When I bought mine which is a bush hog brand from kubota dealer, I love it. My father also uses it on his massey.

You can not go wrong with the gear driven KK that you mentioned amongst your options. That is certainly a better piece of equipment than the Northen Chinese made counterpart. I bought the same KK on special sale I think around $1150 and consider it one of my better investments.

JC,

Do ask the store manager for his 5% to 10% manager's coupon. If he realizes you're ready to pull the trigger, I bit you a nickel he'll produce the coupon for your purchase.

Thanks for all the advise. I called home of economy, they don't have the king kutter II, they have the king kutter xp model (orange).

Sounds like the king kutter II is a much better unit. Will my ct225 be able to handle the 60" or should I look at the offset 48" ?

At 27 hp gross and 19.5 pto hp your CT-225 might be wee bit undersized for a 60" wide tiller considering the soil condition. I say tha,t but my 23.5 pto hp tractor runs my 60"tiller just fine and I have never had to run it at rated 2450 engine and 540 tiller pto rpm. Between 1800-2000 rpm has always been good. If I were worried about the hp I would have still bought 60" tiller and would take out a set of tines or two from the tiller. Doing so I would till same as 48", reducing hp needed, have some extra tinse available and would have gear driven tiller rather than chain. I think .. not 100% sure but the xp's , cat 0 might come with two flavors gear and chain. Again your tractor has cat 1, 3 points and xp model are for sub-compact or cat 0. I'll take the tine off only if my soils is too hard. covering the width of the tractor with a tiller is great considering that you can as well cover ire track by using tiller set up in off set mode.

I like your attitude. Even if you never need parts for your tiller, he'll be there for your other needs. (Plus free advice is often available)

I have a KK II in the 60" width....and bought it on sale at TSC. I think I paid $1250 on sale. GREAT TILLER.....especially for the price. Ive run over a few hidden rocks and stumps.....and gobbled up some brush and barb wire....no damage to anything.

I have 25 PTO HP and think I could get by with a bit less HP....but I have very light soils. Soil (and crop types) may be a big factor for you.....also if the ground has been worked before...etc.

As stated if your HP proves too little...you could take a tine or two off.....operate at slower ground speed.....or till a narrower swath (re-tilling a portion).

I would definitely buy my KK tiller again.

OH....and TSC does have some sale prices during the fall and winter. I waited for those sales and saved some money on the tiller and on some other implements. As said...you gotta ask em.

Talk of tillers and no words from FWJ? His ringing testimonials to the virtues of the KKII tiller convinced me to get one, and for that I will be forever grateful to that flinty curmudgeon. Mine is a 5' and I have managed to bog it down once, in our North field, which is heavy clay and was very wet the day I foolishly tried to till under the multiflora and plant alfalfa. I did manage to bury the skids and turn about a hundred feet before the spool turned into a giant clay "Flintstones wheel". The combined implement & clay were so heavy the rear wheels sunk way in when I raised the TPH. That was with 25 PTO Hp. In sandy loam I can run it deep and the tractor doesn't even seem to be breathing hard. I'd say get one that will cover your tire tracks or one that offsets to one side. The 4' KKII is either offsetable or built with a permanent offset and may be a better match for your machine if you have heavy soil or like to bust a lot of sod. 'Till tomorrow.

Oh how i wish for a Home of Enonomy or TSC.. Here on the west coast the same tiller sells for 2200. Get the KK- I have one and love it; even tho I spent a thousand more than you will.

thanks for the imput. I'm gonna start shopping for a King Kutter II in either the 5' or 4' off-set and see what kind of prices I can come up with. Your advise was great ! This is a helpful site :)

KK tillers have an excellent reputation.

Last March I looked for a tiller and headed first to the dealer who sold me my BX2350 in 2008. They carry BushHog tillers (rebadged from Sigma in Italy). I bought a 48" for $1600 delivered. It is well built and it has served me well.

Getting good dealer service is important to me. If you find a KK from a dealer with a reputation for good service, well, what's not to like?

In 2008 our local TSC carried Dark Horse, some for as little as $900 new. They broke about as fast as they sold them. No Dark Horse at TSC this year.

I like to buy quality right up front. It saves in the long run.

Doug

2008 BX2350, lots of other stuff to go with it.
