:confused2:
I just purchased a Wiley 100 Gal 3-point sprayer with a Hypro Silver (8-roller) Series pump. The reason for my concern is I previously owned a sprayer (tow behind) with a Hypro blue pump and had all kind of issues. I only spray about 2-3 times / year, so the sprayer sat most of the time. Seemed no matter what I did, the pump was locked up (corroded) the next time I used it ?
When I received the new one (2 weeks ago), there was water in the system - I guess they had did a test at the factory. I drained the unit by removing the filter and put a gallon of RV anti-freeze in it. However, on reading the manual, I see the manufacturer recommends a rust preventive anti freeze. I do not think RV anti-freeze contains anything to stop rust ? I have animals and would like to find a non toxic / non poison antifreeze that rust protects. Is there one ?

Comment: I do not understand why these Hypro pumps (at least the 3 I have owned) do not have a drain plug ! I know you can "purge" / "clean" the tank while it is hooked up, but this seems impractical when not connected to the tractor. There does not seem to be a easy way to disconnect the hoses to drain. The hoses are attached to barbed end plastic fittings; which are extremely difficult to remove. The fittings are plastic into metal (pump / control valves). Anyone else have this issue ? Any ideas ?

Thanks for any help on this.

Maybe add a tee in inlet side of pump and a valve to close between pump and tank and put in schrader valve in side port of tee and use air pressure to purge pump...

Just a thought...

I have camlock fittings on the inlet and outlet of my pump, with caps for winter storage.
After seasonal use, I flush the pump well, fill with motor oil, and cap it. It is stored in a rubbermaid tote with all my spare sprayer parts.
This isn't the exact fittings I have, think mine are 1".

What he does works for me too. I use cheap hydraulic oil, recycled I think. Dont use dirty oil.
Never have a pump lock up with oil.

Re-posting this thread as time nears to use and drain sprayer. Can someone elaborate more on these connectors or give me a better idea ? I am confused about the camlock / schrader value suggestions ?
I have PLASTIC fittings on the inlet / outlet of the pump with "barbed" fittings for the hoses. On a previous unit, I removed the hose to drain the pump, BUT this is a tough job to get these off / back on correctly without leaking.
I just want to be able to fully drain the pump and add oil / diesel / anti-freeze to keep the pump from corroding or freezing up. Of course, you could put a few gallons (?) of something in the tank and spray to fill the pump up, but it would take a lot to fill up the filter, lines (havent measured, but would be about 10' of 1.25" hose) and pump.

For the reason noted above, plastic connectors I would prefer not to remove the hoses and pump from the sprayer to soak / store the pump off the machine.

Suggestions appreciated, especially from someone who has converted their 3-point and could recommend specific fittings / parts.

Thanks.

Here are the plastic camlock fittings, they're also made in brass, stainless steel, and aluminum:

Northern and I believe Tractor Supply also carries them in their store.

I cut the hose from the pump and inserted a shut off/drain valve between the pump and the sprayer valve. I can drain the pump and hoses without emptying the tank if I want, or I can drain the whole thing.

If you want to "winterize" your pump, use canola oil instead of motor oil, and you don't have to worry about flushing it out. It will mix with water solutions and not hurt vegetation if sprayed onto it.

Interesting on the Canola Oil ! Hmmm, I was concerned about using some product that I had to spray out on the field / driveway.

I checked into the Camlock fittings by making a call to Wylie (in Waco, Tx) where my rig was made. Interestingly the guy who answered said "oh, we use Camlock on a lot of our equipment". They have an extensive online catalog with more fittings / parts than you can imagine. I had to walk thru this on the phone to get the correct type, size and number of fittings for my sprayer. There is no practical way I could determine this on my own. But, they we very helpful and had the items in stock. It takes (7) separate pieces/connectors, but the grand total was $27 for all.
I assume I need to buy some pipe dope and hopefully the install is "simple" ? In the end, assuming the camlocks are good quality, this is the ticket for me. Thanks very much for the advice !
