3 Point Aerator Find

Found a good price on a Woods (Gill) core aerator. I’ve either paid to have it done or rented from Sunbelt. Neither is satisfactory, it seems. Would something like this do a better job than the water filled tow behind rental type?

Does it have individual wheels for each row of spike or a solid drum? If solid drum it will tear the yard real bad when turning.

Does it have option to add weight or weights easily?

I have rented a core type aerator and needed to add significant weight so that it would penetrate more that an inch or two.

What were the problems that left you with unsatisfactory results with the rental or contracted jobs?

Will owning your own aerator resolve these problems?

My experience with rented pull type was mixed.
One problem you can’t back up if get into corner.
Another problem was lifting to cross drive way, side walk, etc.
3rd was weight, to get decent penetration I had to add considerable more weight than the rental company supplied like additional 200 lbs on 4 ft unit.

I pulled this with my old JD 112 mower so power requirement isn’t significant just need heavy tractor for traction.

Re: rental - low penetration. The units were water fillable; even topped off I found the pluggers not going in terribly deep,

Re: contracted job - they go too fast with the same results… and to aerate / overseed cost $1400 for my 1.2 acre lawn.

My thinking is I can save in the long run purchasing a core aerator. The seed and my labor won’t be anywhere near $1400. Alternatively, I’ll speak with the company and ask them to take their time (or find someone who will).

Things to consider:

Will your 1025 pickup the aerator high enough to travel across gravel or pavement?

Will it lift it with the additional ballast?
