How smooth is the area you will be mowing? If it's rough, higher speeds and larger decks won't do you much good. (The 54" deck on my current Garden tractor is too big: always digging in when I cross the rough spots.)

Do you want to be able to use this for anything other than mowing?

My most commonly used mowers have a 50" deck, 60" decks and 72" deck. I have smaller decks, but I wouldn't want anything smaller than 50". I have never had a problem with the wider decks. My cub cadet with a 42" deck does the best job, but is about 3 times slower. The wider decks do a pretty good job as long as you use them right.
