2910 HST broken?

I just bought a used 02 2910 HST w/ FEL yesterday. I'm a newbie and didn't think to try out all three speed ranges (L,M,H) as it was absolutely storming out. Well, brought it home and it seems that I can only engage M. It will not go into L and if I put it in H, it still is in the M range as it goes about 5mph. The level also seems to slide back and forth from M to N to H without really stopping. It's under full warranty but is this a common problem? I'm calling the dealer I bought it from on Monday.

Sounds like the lever is just not properly connected at the bottom end. In addition to M, I assume you can get it into N. If the engine will start in anything other than Neutral, a safety switch is not working or not adjusted right. I'm wondering whether someone had trouble getting it into the different ranges, tried to force it, and broke something. Those are not synchromesh gears and it's not at all uncommon for the lever to not want to move into a range and all you have to do is very lightly step on the hydro pedal, release the pedal, and try again. In other words, turn the gears just a tiny bit to line them up and it slips into the range you want very easily.

Anyway, I would have to agree with Bird, the gears in the main transmission aren't syncromesh. I'd imagine that the lever is out of adjustment. I don't believe the dealer would warranty the unit if the speed range gears were "toast". That's a major rebuild job.

I agree that the range lever probably just needs to be connected/adjusted.

An interesting thing about starting the B2710/B2910 series (not sure about the B7800, but it's probably in the same boat as the B2910).

The neutral safety switch is only on B2710 models with a serial number below 15496. (From page G-17 in the WSM manual.) The later B2710's, all B2910's and most likely B7800's don't have that switch. I can start my B2910 with the lever in any gear or neutral position. However, the clutch pedal must be depressed.

Not sure why Kubota removed the switch, but I usually put mine in neutral before starting just to be safe. Actually, until I read the "Checking Engine Start System" section in the WSM, I thought it had the neutral start switch. By then, I had already formed the habit of putting it in neutral first.

Thanks, Rick, I had an early B2710 so it had to be in neutral; didn't know they changed that.

Why wouldn't Kubota honor warranty work, if this was the problem?

I do agree, it sounds like a linkage problem.

Bird - I'll have to go see if I can start it in any gear. I only started it in neutral. The machine is in excellent conditiion with low hrs so I am finding it hard to believe that it has a major problem. We got it home around 8:00 pm last night and of course just had to start it up and play with it. I'm better at scooping dirt than my other half is. okay, SO said that the arms that moves the transmission gears moves a full 90 degrees rearward when going into L and a full 90 degrees forward when going into H. Can see no adjustment on the leverage arm.

I don't mean to chide you about the diesel fuel, but I pulled a shot so-to-speak with my lawnmower. My 5030 is a little too big to mow lawns with and I'd probably wipe the cab off on a tree limb so I went and bought a gasoline riding lawnmower. One evening about a month ago when I got home from my day job (farming is part time), I got the lawn tractor out and checked the gas level. It was low so without thinking, I grabbed the gas (diesel) can. I filled it up and started mowing. After a few minutes, I smelled something like oil burning. I stopped the mower, looked at the can sitting by the shed and then looked at the tank on the mower. By golly, gas isn't red, it's clear. I thought maybe I'd finish mowing so I started it back up. It started, but backfired a little. Got it up to speed and finished mowing. After that I put it in the shed. That saturday, I tried to start it. No luck. Had to drain the tank and put in fresh gas. Then I had to either start the engine. Didn't seem to hurt the mower running on diesel, just a little stinky.

I normally don't have diesel in a 5 gallon can. I fill the tractor(s) from a bulk tank by the barn. It just so happened that I had some in the can that was left over from filling my diesel pressure washer.

Don't put gas in a diesel engine, however. The gasoline under the increased compression will destroy the engine.

I have two separate gas and diesel cans. One is round, one is square. Both a 5 gallon. This prevents me from filling the wrong tank with the wrong juice.

If I could just remember what I put in each can, I'd be fine. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Just to show you how dumb and dumber I am, the can with the diesel in it was yellow and said "DIESEL" on both sides. I know that gasoline cans are RED and diesel cans are YELLOW, but I had brain fade, or maybe it was a "geratric" moment as my wife says. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Hi all- well the picked up my tractor yesterday and are working on it today. They think the transmission is fine but something is not connected inside the case...or something along those lines. They are supposed to call and let me know.

Yup, I sounds like something has come undone. You should be able to start the tractor in any gear range by simply pushing in the clutch. My '02' 2910 has a very tight shift. If I'm going to change gears, I push in the clutch, and let the engine idle for a few seconds, then try to ease it into the next range. If it does not go easily, I just nudge the fwd/back pedal a bit, and it usually slips right into gear. Hopefully, the previous owner didn't get frustrated, and force a shift.

Guess we now know why that tractor was traded in...I assume traded in...

I suppose the dealer is standing behind the repair, since he sold you the tractor in good faith as a good condition tractor.
