John Deere 2520
I bought a new 2520 today and need to decide on a fel bucket size. The tractor currently has a 54 inch one on it. However, for an extra $30 I can get the 61 incher. I will be using it to mostly move fill, firewood, mulch and gravel. Any thoughts

With the 61" on mine, it will easily lift whatever fits in it or fills it up. Just make sure you're set up with plenty of ballast on the rear.

Get a 61 , there ant no need to play. :D
2520 will handle anything you put in it. Then weld
grade 70 3/8 hooks on it. from AW-direct . then weld 1/4 inch gussets
on the inside right under the hooks. and it will be bullet proof....;)
and dont forget the tooth bar. order it from Makham. order it 60 and 5/8 wide and its perfect fit. Did i leave anything out.....:p

Thanks boys, this is what I got. First, I traded my 04 2210 w/ fel, mmm and box scraper (dealer gave me $11,500 wow!) and bought 07 2520 w/ 200cx, 5' box scraper and loaded r4's for $16,200.

Andy -
Congrats! Sounds like a great deal. You will love that machine. Oh yea - 61 in is the way to go. I got the JD toothbar which I know Chris feels is overkill but I like it - it is a PITA to get off though b/c of a tight fit. Need to do some grinding on it. Just switched it out for the cutting edge in prep for winter.

Ya Brad , I got fed up with that thing. it weighs a ton. Mine now is a conversation peace in the corner....:) not only was it to hard to get on and off. it was just way to heavy to carry around. i put up with it for 4 months.
when you finaly get fed up like i did , get a Markam. for $232 it a deal. and has more teeth closer together. and just slides right on. and at least you can move it around. i have popped stumps out with it. its very strong. the 232 is worth not haveing to fight it no more. I have took it off 2 or 3 times a day. and i dont mind. i would never have done that with the JD bar.;)

I have a 53 on my 2305 so the 61 sounds right for your size tractor. As for the toothbar Markam makes some nice stuff and the customer service is great.

Chris - I couldn't believe how heavy that thing was yesterday when I took it off. I had to but a chain around the two center teeth and hook to a stump then pull back to get the thing off. Not sure how the guys at the shop put it on. I have the cutting edge on now which is much more manageable to put on.

Brad , in the shop i would haft to use a crow bar. to pry it off it took about 30 min to get it off . and to put it on it took a sledge hammer. this got old very quick.
not to mention walking it across the floor. to lean it up against the wall.:(
it did not take long to know i needed a better way....;)
I found thay way through Markam.

Ditto the 61 inch on my 2320. BTW, H&H Manufacturing makes a nifty landscape bar--have one on my 512 for the 5203. It has mucho teeth and have used it for digging, prickley pear removal, brush clearing. Have not tried the 7 tooth Markham, but intend to get one of those for the 2320.

After reading your comments I ordered a markham toothbar this morning. I already have a JD toothbar that took me a half hour to remove for some backgrading. I don't know how long that it would take to put back on.
I'd like to correct some slight errors and pass along some information.
First it's Markham, not markam at Markham Welding - Home.
I ordered it this morning and Ashley, nice lady, promised to ship it today and then call me with a shipping tracking number.
The price was $231 plus $36.26 for shipping from north carolina to pennsylvania.
It will come with grade 8 !! half inch bolts.
I asked about measurements and was told to measure the inside dimension eight inches back from the cutting edge. It was 60 7/8" for my JD 61" bucket. They took 1/4" off that measurement to allow 1/8" free space on either side. So I should expect a 60 5/8" width. Don't try to second guess them by allowing for free space yourself or you will have to use shimming washers. Better yet, ask Ashley exactly what they will build.

You are correct it is Markham , sorry for my mistake. and yes the delivered
size will be 60 and 5/8 , i forgot to mention the 1/4 inch thay remove. ;)
its slides off and on so much nicer. you will enjoy useing it. much more than the JD bar.

Well my 60 5/8" (actual- the bucket was 60 7/8") markham toothbar for my 2320 came today at noon. I ordered it two days ago (about a half hour before the post two up) and did not ask for special delivery or expedited handling. How's that for fast delivery from north carolina to pennsylvania?

Now here's the comparison:
JD toothbar - 126 pounds six forks measuring 8 3/4"
Markham - 73 pounds six forks measuring 7 3/4"

JD toothbar comes with two bolts (about 13mm) and two metric 'crushed thread locking nuts. It takes an impact wrench and muscle to get these nuts off. It took two guys, a sledgehammer, crowbars and a half hour to get the toothbar off the bucket. I dread to think how long it would take to put it on. The 61" bucket is predrilled for this toothbar.

The Markham toothbar comes with 1.2" SAE bolts, nuts, lockwashers and a 3/8" backing plate. It slid into place on the bucket very easily with about 1/8" clearance on either side. This toothbar cannot use the buckets predrilled mounting holes and you must drill your own. still, it's not a big job if you use a centering punch, 1/4" pilot hole and then enlarge it to 1/2". 3RRL (link is above) has a nice pictoral on how to do this. I had to use a few taps with a rubber mallet to seat the toothbar. Maybe the leading edge of my bucket is bent or maybe a few minutes attacking the toothbar with an angle grinder will help. I still want to get the backing plate welded in place.

I may have hit on a stratgem for getting fast delivery. I mentioned at the end of my phone call that
"I'm buying this from you because of the recommendations of the guys on the forum"
"tractorbynet?"
"Yes, we share information about all the good products and vendors. We also share information on the bad items and vendors."

I'll have to remember that.
Does anyone want a 126 pound boat anchor?

My Markham bar has 7 teeth on it. and you are right it is much
easier to deal with. I just welded up the old holes from the JD tooth bar
and drilled new ones. I did not use the bolts that came with it. i ended up useing the big bolts and washers from the JD bar. it is really a nice set up......;) you will really enjoy it alot more.
