My tractor has had trouble starting lately.

The ignition switch is making but nothing gets to the starter.

If I cross the starter lead posts with a screwdriver a few times it tries to turn the started but doesn't seem to engage the flywheel gear. Then after I do this a few times then she'll start with the key once.

Shut her down and I have to go thru this routine again.

I'm guessing the solenoid is going south.

Any opinions?

Thanks

Any other ideas? Key switch maybe? I guess I can check that with a meter.

I just installed a new solenoid and have the same problem. Even when I jumper between the posts it takes a few times before the solenoid kicks in. Every time the first few hits turns the starter motor over but it's not engaging the flywheel.

BTW what's supposed to go on the spade terminal on the solenoid between the main power posts? Mine never had anything connected there for as long as I've had it.

I guess I'll be carrying around my "starting hammer" for a bit longer.

Check your ground. I was ready to buy a new starter when I found the ground bolt on the fram had become loose.

Just bringing this one back to the top.

Nobody knows what that spade connector on the soleniod is for?

check all your connections. If your connections are good. Put a volt meter on the batt. when trying to start & watch the voltage
