I was of the bigger is better thought process myself for many years. After dumping countless dollars into big inch chevy's, a friend and myself decided to experiment. We had his Chevelle (71) running 11.75 with a 468. After many years of drag racing, the big motor was getting tired. He had the 307 that came in the car and a 283 sitting in his shop. Since we do this for fun, we decided to build the 307 to see if we could get the same times as with the 468. Though challenging, we are real close. Best time so far 12.18. .060 over, solid lift cam, great set of heads, etc (do not want to give away all the secrets). I also have a 70 Chevelle with a milder .060 327 with a hydraulic cam. It runs 13.23 on stock suspension. We are in the process of building the 283 for my car to see if we can break into the 12s. Again, a challenge but all in good fun. And for a lot cheaper than the big blocks. We may through a turbo on the 283, but I am not real confident with the bottom end under any large amount of boost (over 6 psi).
