The starter has a ground wire? Can you elaborate a little on that?

Good day folks,

Blue wouldn't start for me today. I call her Blue on account of her color...lol!

Hope you don't mind me running this by you before I go down the part buying trail. I suspect it is the ignition switch but at $300 per unit want some more assurances before ordering. Am I missing anything in your opinion?

Thanks in advance for your help and interest!

This is what I've done.

1) Tested continuity between starter engage pin on switch with starter connector - Good.
2) Engaged glow plug. Illustrated good on dash.
3) Positioned key in run position. Illustrated good on dash.
4) tested voltage in run position, good. On glow plug position, good. When I move the key to start position, I LOSE VOLTAGE.
5) the seat safety switch is disconnected and shorted out to make a closed circuit. Been this way for years.

Also it appears this switch part number is dependent on the PIN of the tractor. I have looked on the tractor and online for the PIN but can't find it. If anyone knows of this please pass it along.

Thanks again and cheers, Greg.
I had the same problem with my 2000 tc29d. It turned out to be that the ignition switch was loose and instead of going all the way to the start position it stopped short.

Looks like I spoke too soon. Blue is down again despite it starting 10's since I cleaned and tightened the + battery wire to the solenoid.

It would appear that I am not getting 12v to engage the solenoid. The solenoid works as it closed when I applied 12v to the tab.

I traced the wire back to a relay that is close to the fuse panel. Checked it for continuity and it passed.

I am getting to the end of my limited skills here. Any thoughts? Are those relays prone to failure? It's cheap and wouldn't mind swapping it out for ***** and grins. Could it be a safety switch? I disabled the seat switch years ago and it appears sound.

By the way for anyone doing this repair the hidden bolt on the starter is a nut and bolt unlike the visible fastener. You have to take the front and side panel off to get a wrench off of it. I am embarrassed to say how long I spent trying to remove it thinking it was stripped, meanwhile it was simply spinning.

Thanks in advance for any additional feedback.... cheers

Thanks for this .... a lot cheaper than OEM.... I almost dropped when quoted. cheers

Maybe I missed it in your description- does the motor turn over when you try to start it or nothing happens?
Sorry missed this.... no nothing happens. As it turns out not getting 12v to the solenoid activate terminal. traced the wire to a relay and checked good for continuity. Cheers,

If you are still trying to trouble shoot this, I believe that the way the starting circuit operates is as follows:
(Assuming that all wires and cables are intact)
-- +12vdc to the starter relay coil runs from a +12vdc source (fuse panel) to the starter switch, from the starter switch to and through the contacts on a relay (called the safety relay) then to the starter relay coil.
---- the safety relay is almost a standard 12 volt automotive Bosch style relay, it has the same functions, but the terminals are arranged differently. If needed, you can replace the pricey New Holland part with a cheap Bosch style, but you need to repin the connector. I talked about this earlier in another post. Search to find that if your safety relay is bad.
-- there are a series of safety switches on the tractor (i.e. pto, gear, clutch, seat, etc) that all need to be in the proper position for starting. Ultimately, if all the safety switches line up correctly, it will energize the safety relay mentioned above.
---- depending when New Holland made the change, I believe your TC30 may or may not have a little electronic box that is called a 'safety computer' depending upon its age.
----------- If your tractor does not have the safety computer, the safety switches (mentioned above) are all wired in series with the final output connected to the safety relay's (mentioned above) coil.
---------- If your tractor does have a safety computer, I believe the safety switches (mentioned above) are all wired to the safety computer and the safety computer has an output to the safety relay's (mentioned above) coil.

Bottom line, if your starter relay is not getting +12 volts to its coil terminal, and the fuse supplying the +12 volts to the ignition switch is good, check that the ignition switch is passing the +12 volts to the safety relay, and that the safety relay is passing the +12 volts to the starter relay coil. If the safety relay is not getting energized, check each of the safety switches and then the safety computer.

All testing should be done by measuring voltage at the terminal or connection. Just checking continuity with a low impedance digital meter may show continuity when the contacts will lose the continuity when a load is applied,

I also believe I have posted with wiring diagrams for both a 1520 and a T1520 in the past. Your TC30 is right between them so its wiring should be close to one of them depending on whether it does have or does not have a safety computer. Searching my posts should lead you there if interested.
