Need help, mowing lawn, tractor just quit,Installed new starter relay wiggled wires cleaned connections, tractor started right up!!Shut off tractor, put covers back on,cranks but won't start! Pulled a plug held it against bolt no spark!Could it be starter solenoid!Tractor only has 540hrs on it! The safety switches under seat was bolted tight years ago so that shouldn't be a factor.Help please!!!

I'd be wondering about the ignition sw or it's connections... do you have access to a schematic for your machine? Anyhow, might want to clean elect connections there , but make sure you know what hooks to what first before taking anything apart - easy to get mixed up. and if you replace sw, use omly OEM - aftermarket types can have different innards...

I haven't downloaded a schematic on this tractor yet, looking behind the battery at the ignition switch,it does look pretty nasty, the ignition solenoid I replaced was oem,I'm buying parts right from a cub dealer,I did order a new solenoid, but it won't be here till middle of next week!! I'll be looking for a hay baylor by then!! Thanks I'll give it a try by cleaning the switch, thanks again!

take before/after pixs or make a diagram of what wire goes where first - easy to get messed up on that switch area...

while yer in there doing major TLC, might be a good time to pull the engine cowling sheet metal and give the cooling fins, etc. a good cleaning too - particularly if such has not been done any time recently. An engine running hot can misbehave like what you've described...

I don't see how that engine ever got any cooling at all with all the tin work around it!!! I t probably would have been easier to pull the engine than trying to get at some of the bolts on the tin work!!Fins were really clean,we tried to take care of the tractor to make it last for awhile!!Dad spent a good chunk of change on it when he bought it,the one he traded in was a 12hp 67!!

ain't sure we are talking the same sheet metal.. what I'm referring to is that sheet metal right next to the engine block casting(s) that directs the main engine cooling fan airflow about and thru the cast block fins for primary engine cooling. That's where the trash and rodent nests like to settle/hide and cause catastrophic engine hot spots... are we talking the same area? Reading your response, i got the impression you are talking about the engine compartment exterior enclosure (mainly for appearance and sound control) ?

Yes its a magnum,my neighbor who works as a mechanic for the gas co. used his 12v tester when we cranked the engine we got no spark to the plugs.
