I just purchased a ford/new holland 1715. When I turn the pto on, there is a loud noise emitting from that area. When you shut pto down the noise stops. Any ideas?

Most likely a bearing going bad, chipped or broken gear, or could be as simple as a snap ring has gotten out of its groove and let things move.
I'm not familiar with that model, but can you turn the PTO shaft with your hand with the tractor not running, You may feel the roughness of a bearing, or you may hear other noises to lead you to the problem.

I can turn the pto easily with no sound when the tractor is off.
Does the pot have play in it? There is a needle bearing on the tip of it that can come apart and cause catastrophic problems if not fixed. I just went through it with my 1910. I had a machine shop untemper, build up the tip and then retemper the pto shaft so it would fit the new needle bearing. Sadly, the rear seal is no longer available, but I found a new poly seal that fits on Amazon.
