Hello.
Just got a nice 1650 w/38" deck. The engine looks original because it matches the s/n on the frame...I mean, both are from year 1979. I cant read all of the engine model and spec # because it is covered up by the frame. On top of the engine, there is a label that says 12 hp Kohler. This puzzles me. Arent these 1650's 16 hp?
Can any one shed some light on the possibilities? And lastly, was the 1650 the largest garden tractor built by IH or were there bigger more powerful ones built in '80 or '81?
Ive searched the net and not found much info. I would really appreciate any thoughts you all have about this older Cub.
Thanks,
dwight

we have a 1250 that was purchased around that same time- maybe 1978. The 12 means 12 HP and the 50 designates hydrostatic drive compared to 00 designating conventional clutch. Our model was yellow and white and then they switched to red and white for a while. I recall they 12 was the smallest HP for that frame. I believe 16 or possibly 18 was the high end HP.

You have a great tractor there. We looked at replacing it with a newer one and were told by the dealer not to - it is a great model.

I seem to remember that there was a 700 series and 900 series that were made at the very end of IH's involvement with lawn tractors that were very substantial machines. Having said that, there is nothing to complain about in the 1250, 1450, and 1650 models. VERY nice tractors and very capable.

A true collector's item from back when IHC was KING! IHC sold more lawn tractors than just about anyone. You cannot kill their shaft drive! They put the same transmissions and rearends in the Cadets that went into their Cub farm tractor.

You know, Ive been puzzled about why the HOOD says 1650 but the engine is labeled as a 12 hp.

Im wondering if the HOOD got changed out and I really own a 1250 Cub Cadet....

Yeah, I love that little tractor. I go to the shop now and wonder, "Humm do I work the Cub or do I work the new Kubota?" I love having this problem.

Thanks for the replies so far....

you've got a great little tractor there, we've got our second one, only because a friend of the family died, and his had a brandnew 12 hp koler in it, and our old one had just about wore out it's orginal engine for the third time...

the only thing i don't like about these mowers, is that the decks seem to be prone to plugging if you mow much heavey or wet grass.... anyone have any idea how to cure this??? /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
