12 inch bench grinder

hi guys. I recently picked up a long neck cincinatti ben h grinder for 50 bucks..i got it all wired up and running but it seems to be backwards from my smaller grinders. This brings me to my queation. which directions should the wheel be running in? mine is currently in counterclockwise amd i dont like it..i am kot sure how to swicht the polarity yet either.. thanks i can send a picture e

Looks like someone did some aluminum on the grinding wheel. Two things can happen.. Wheel breaks or aluminum catches on fire. Either is bad news.

Definitely should be rotating downward toward the rest on the grinding side. Maybe the start windings are toasted. Try spinning the wheel, then close the power switch. If it then powers up in the right direction, investigate from there...

thanks. i will try that..i did notice the aluminum yoo..i think the same person who ground the aluminum must have changed the firection..lol...any ideas where i can order 12 inch polishing pads for the other side in canada?

Nothing wrong with the starter...i am sure that i jusy need to switch some wires around to to change direction

Is that a 220V plug or 110v. 3 phase motors can be reversed but not 110v at least not that I am aware of. DC motors have to be correctly wired or they will run backward and some drill motors have internal wiring that phase shifts the windings to make them run backward and forward but normally 110v motors will only turn one direction regardless of how the 2 wires are hooked up due to the alternating current which cycles +/- between the two poles at 60 cycles per second so reversing the wires wouldnt do anything.
There may be some internal wiring on that big industrial motor that would allow a reverse rotation. You would need to be inside the motor terminal to find it though.
The rotation should be rotating downward when you are standing in front of it which would be clockwise on the left and counterclockwise on the right if you were standing in front of each shaft respectively.

Get an abrasive wheel dresser and dress up that wheel which will remove the groove and the aluminum.

It is a 3 phase 600v mptor gary..i do have a wheel dresser but wan to wait till i get it turning in the direction i want before using it..lol..i definitly like this big grinder...very smooth and quiet with little vibration..also the motor spins at 1800 verse 3600 on the smaller ones..

If you are running it on 3-phase, then swap any two of the phases and it will run the other way.

Boy you're not kidding, I don't use mine anymore because of the screaming motor. And I have the motor in an out building along side the shop with the compressor!

Switch the wire at the plug and got it spjnning it the roght direction..pumped almoat a full tube of grease in the 3 bearings and it runs true and quoet...definilt like this grinder more an more as i use it...

That sounds like a lot of grease, careful as it is easy to overgrease and get it into the windings. We have a 200hp motor at work and the motor shop guy told me not to do more than 10 pumps into each bearing at a time.
