1070 will not start

A month or so ago our JD1070 began having starting problems. Sometimes nothing when key turned, sometimes as steady clicking. Assumed low battery but even after charging battery and eventually replacing, that was not the problem.. got worse.. not starting at all now.. sometimes the clicking than that dies. Also a one time “clunk” as is a solenoid trying to start.
Operating manual no help. Has oil, all fuses good. Haven’t tried to jump starter. Ideas?

First thing to do, have the battery load tested.. that would be my first suspicion.

Second, remove and clean all connections including ground cable.

Possibly the starter solenoid or starter itself, I would lean more towards the solenoid OR battery cables need cleaning on each end both positive and negative.

Does it have a neutral safety switch?

Yes and always start in neutral. Will try cable end cleaning. Do you advise jumping starter to eliminate that from list? Thx

If you clean the cable ends and it doesn't help, you can try to jump the starter and that should tell you if it's the solenoid or not. Just be careful and be SURE IT'S IN NEUTRAL!!!

i had a 870 that had this issue years ago. turned out ro be the ground cable where it bolted to the frame. i ended up replacing cable and installing it in a new location as the metal under the cable was badly rusted. Jumping never helped because ground was the issue.

also another test. have someone crank over tractor while you fiddle with twisting battery cable ends. i have found problem spots in the past doing this.suddenly the tractor starts while you twisted positive cable at battery post...bingo.

2nd the battery ground cable to frame. Remove bolt and clean frame and cable. Apply vaseline after reassembly.

2-3 years back I had the same problem with my 970. Turned out to be where the ground wire bolted to the frame under the right side of the tractor. Cleaned up the connection, problem fixed. 970-1070 is the same tractor as the 970, 1070 has a turbo.

No. 970 is 3 cylinder. 1070 is 4 cylinder on same framework. My 1070 did this problem activity. I replaced the two contact plates in the solenoid [ ebay ] and it returned to normal service, although I do recommend cleaning both ends of each battery cable. Search for Denso starter contact rebuild kit. Under $20.

That is funny, my 970 is a 4 cyl with the original motor. Check out Tractor Data. com. ( yes, I'm sure of it !! ) I think the 870 might be a 3 though ??
Before buying any parts, I'd check out the cable ends where the ground bolts to the tractor frame, and the battery connections as well, also where the positive bolts to the starter @ the top of the solenoid.
