1040 or 1042

I am looking to get my first lawn tractor in the near future and right now I have my eye on a used 1042 for $1000. it has 21 hrs on it and it looks like its a 2008. I also looked at a brand new 1040 for $1500 at a local dealer.
Any reason I should go with one or the other? There's a lot of negative feedback on here about those models, should I stay away? any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

I personally would prefer the 1042 over the 1040. The main gripe with the 1040 is the CVT tranny.

Get the 1042 and have a dealer give it a once-over, do a fluid/filter change, etc. You'll still be in to it for less than a new 1040, and in the end you'll have a better machine.

well I was wrong about the year of the 1042... really wrong! he said he thinks it's a 96 or 97. It's hard to imagine it's that old and only has 21 hours but that's what he said. any more advice?

The 1042 has only been made since 2005, so either he is wrong, or the model number is wrong.

If it really is a 1042, then I still stand by my first comment that it would be the better choice.
