I'm new to tractors, and need to begin thinking about buying a brush hog for my new to me tractor. I see some brush hogs have one small rear wheel in the middle. Other brush hogs have two small rear wheels on each side, but still on the back. I also see brush hogs with large tires on both sides. Are there advantages and disadvantages of each type? If so, what are they? Also, I see some two wheel brush hogs have a cylinder toward the back. Is this to adjust the rear cutting height? Thanks for your help.

The twin wheels will give a smoother ride. For us here it means woodchuck holes are not an issue. Larger tires will also give a smoother ride and a hydraulic lift will help a tractor that might be a little light on the front end but yu do need additional hydraulics on the tractor to operate it. The rear of any deck should be a little higher then the front while cutting or else you will use a lot more horsepower to cut which also means wasted fuel!

A single wheeled brush hog will do a MUCH better job around obstacles.

Most 3pt. rough cutters 6' and under use a single tailwheel, over 6' and you find duals, some of which are hydraulic raise/lower. The big tires you see are on mounted or semi-mounted cutters (drawbar pull - typically 8'+)) and are all hydraulic raise/lower. It's just a function of the specific size and type of cutter and I wouldn't factor it into my decision...

Last Friday I just got a 6' LP bush hog, it has one tail wheel. So far it seems pretty good and it is easy to back into things. Most of the two tail wheeled bush hogs I have seen are the pull types and not the 3 pt. Definately go with 3 pt if you have it.
