Finally bought my first ever tractor! International 674! Help a rookie fix it!

Thanks y’all. I’m over the road right now but I’ll let y’all know how it goes

Let me ask you this, I didn’t know anything about this tractor when I got it and left it for about a month with the lever you use to start the tractor in the start position and fuel cutoff valve open. Would that allow fuel to keep coming into the injectors even if the tractor is off? Thus that...

Ok, that would be good if that was the case. Do you think this filter will work...

Thanks! Yeah I actually think the spacing in the front wheels has caused it to bend a little in the middle chassis on the front.

So idk the reason the filter housing is gone but I can speculate. There are a lot of people who have been replacing the CAV style fuel filters and assembly that have glass bowl bottoms with spin type fuel filters (Someone did this with a 684 that also has a D239 I saw on the Red Power Forum)...

So the first thing I’ve noticed while looking through the tractor is there aren’t any fuel filters. The entire housing has been removed and I would assume was bypassed. It looks like a line going straight from the back of the tractor (which I would assume is from the tank) straight to the pump I...

I’m going to have a qualified mechanic come and look it over, and give me an initial diagnosis if possible. I’ll let you all know how it goes. I’ve got a few other things that need done before this tractor, so it will be a little while before I start throwing work and money into it, if at all...

This is interesting, because I’m wondering what could really make a tractor unrepairable? I assumed since it was running the block was ok, and anything else can really be replaced. Is that wrong?

I looked at tractors that are around 10,000. The only one that peaked my interest would’ve been a 574 with a loader that had 500 hours on a rebuild. I could probably get a rebuild and a loader on a 674 for that price and have 0 hours on it. It all depends on how much work is needed. Thanks for...

Finally bought my first ever tractor! International 674! Help a rookie fix it!

Yeah, that’s the good thing about spending so little on it so far. I could spend 5k on a rebuild and have $8100 into a tractor with a brand new rebuilt engine. Thanks for all the help, I’ve been busy with work, (Im a truck driver so I work a lot of hours) but as soon as I get the time I’ll start...

And if it is the rings that means the tractor will need an inframe?

Should I leave the dipstick and oil fill lid off to look for smoke?

I have almost zero mechanical experience so everything you said is very helpful. Thanks. I’ve got just enough to change all the fluids and filters and do small stuff. I’ll follow this flowchart.

The level is really high and it’s also really thin.

Thanks for all the help. I’ll probably end up buying another pump entirely for it. After shipping and paying someone to rebuild it, it may be close to the coat of another one anyway. I’m going to change the oil first and see how long it takes for the oil to get really think and over full...

I bought the big manual package from them when I got the tractor. They’re nice

Yeah it would probably be cheaper to have this one rebuilt than just buying a new one. Thanks!

I hope so. Having never been on a tractor before and having hilly land I’ll definitely need a ROPS lol.

Thanks for the advice. I’m thinking that if I have to do major engine work (like a nut and bolt rebuild of the tractor) I think I’ll be sending the engine to a machine shop for the first rebuild or two.

Hi, I bought my first tractor at auction. I wanted something cheap that ran and that I could learn how to work on. This one was exactly what I was looking for. It’s an International 674 diesel with the D239. It was running in the auction video that I’ll post below and I got it for just...

    International 674

But see you got around 10k total into it and might have another 10 years before another 5k investment. Solid value IMO depending on what you do with it.

    International 674

That’s what I’m thinking. I can put a lot of money into a $2400 tractor for the price of a mint condition used tractor now a days. It’s also something I can work and learn on. If I mess something up learning on a $2400 tractor it’s not the end of the world. Where as if I messed something up on...

    International 674

It will need one eventually I’d assume. Having one where parts are easily accessible for these type of thing will ensure I’ll be able to hopefully keep it running forever.

    International 674

Thanks for all your replies. I think it’s got over 10,000 hours because the hour meter rolled back to like 1200 hours or so.I haven’t brought it back yet so I don’t know if the hour meter is running. It’s rough but it runs and it was $2400. I’m going to try to put a loader on it so if anyone...

    International 674

Hi, I bought my first tractor today at auction. I don’t even have property yet but I needed a tractor and this seemed like a good deal. What is your impression of the International 674? Have any of you ever rebuilt the d239 engine? Any advice with this tractor or tractors in general would be...

    Newbie question

Well then I’ll need a skid steer too. I’ve been looking at a couple. I’ll have to use a chainsaw for bigger softwoods that aren’t valuable to the properties, but if I can get something that will cut 12 inch trees or smaller that will save me a ton of time.

    Newbie question

Oh I got it way wrong. I thought I’d be shift up 12 gears. I was like, if I can’t float that’ll get annoying quick. thanks for responding. I think it said they were synchronized. What does that mean?

    Newbie question

Hi, im going to be buying my first tractor and the tractor I was looking at has a 12x12 shuttle shift. I’m wondering how similar this transmission is to a semi truck 10 or 13 speed? Can I “float”? If I’m going from low range to medium do I go to medium range while in 4th and then when I shift...
