Good comment about the MFWD limit. I think the spec I have seen in the forums is 1.571 lead, but I’ll be darned if I can find that number listed anywhere in the owners manual or service manual. Do you know what the true 770 spec is and where it can be found?

Hello all, Can anyone tell me what a fair price is for a 1983 317 mower with a 33 tiller? Tiller seems to be in good working order, plenty of life left in tines. Old engine was replaced with a Kohler KT17 Series 2 with full pressure lubrication system. Appreciate any advice.

The tech manual has instructions on how to set up & adjust the governor spring. But I'll tell you that I had similar problems and it ended up being carb adjustments that corrected it.

I've got a 317 and a 33 tiller. 300 series tillers use the mower deck hydraulics to raise/lower the tiller and the rear PTO to drive the tiller gear box. I actually am ready to part with my 33 tiller if you in the mood for drive south (Dallas)

It's not that hard. Just put female spade connectors on the wires coming off of your work light and they should fit right into the installed connector on your tractor. You don't need a special plug. I just did this on my 770.

I've got a 317 with a kt17 series 2 in it. I put in the series 2 after my series 1 blew. The series 2 is a really strong reliable engine. I've used my 317 for mowing 3 acres, tilling a one acre garden and running a 49 snow thrower.

If you have a multimeter you can test the starter primary and secondary windings without pulling it out. Tech manual tells you how many ohms you should get on each winding. I've got that book in my shop somewhere....

Starter is definitely in a bad spot on this machine. First time I replaced mine I pulled the engine. Second time I replaced it (after making the mistake of buying a Chinese starter vs Kohler part) I just loosened the engine mounts and jacked up that side of the engine far enough to get to both...

Easiest way to drain fuel on this machine is to pull fuel line off carb and pull it down below the engine. The only other option is to reach up behind the left rear wheel and disconnect the line where it exits the tank. That's also where the fuel filter is (worth checking). If engine not...

Mine is a kohler series 2 and there's no logo on the air filter canister.

I should mention that since the spec number is stamped on the shroud it's possible to have a 317 mower with a Series 2 spec # on the shroud but actually have a Series 1 engine inside. There are whole threads on weekend freedom machines dedicated to help you tell the difference between Ser 1 and 2.

The spec number on the kt17 is actually on a stamped plate mounted on and engine shroud near the firewall. I replaced a blown series 1 with a series 2 short block, runs like a champ. Wasn't worth it for the money, but of course that wasn't the point. Check out weekend freedom machines...

I just bought one for my 770 on ebay. New seat from dealer was about $265. I spent about $160, nice seat and ready to install. But the SMV bracket on the new seat had different hole spacing than my original seat so right now my SMV sign is hanging from the top bolt only.

I have a 317 that I rebuilt after the Kohler Series 1 engine blew. I was able to find a series II short block on weekend freedom machines (google it) for about $800. It runs like a champ now. It probably wasn't worth the price but it wasn't just about the money :-)

Easy on the 317s.... I put a new Kohler KT17 Series II engine in mine (full pressure oil system) and it's a real workhorse now.

The tractor had mismatch fronts on it when I bought it. One is a firestone ag tire but leaks badly and not much tread left. The other is a cheap tire from local farm store, not even same size as the firestone tire. So I'm just planning to start over .
