Start with grease. If it doesn't drop out, end with air. Grease (or 80 weight oil) seals and lubricates.

Both ideas are good. They lubricate as well as seal. The grease gun approach basically turns the barrel and the cannon ball into a hydraulic ram. They use the same principle to tension the tracks on an excavator or a dozer. That should be enough force to dislodge a cannon ball! See 1:40

I think his friend jammed on the 4wd lever in an abusive manner. This kind of thing happens more than it should when lending a tractor to others.

The bolt head in this picture is 13mm ((about 1/2"). I'd like to see the stick that snapped off a 1/2" shaft.

If Bill is right, the OP has pretty much decided on Mahindra. If Bill is wrong, and the Op is open to other brands, I would suggest looking at the Kioti NS or NX series. In my opinion they are better quality and more refined than the Mahindras made in India.

Is it dry enough to use a hand operated rotary cutter? If so, cut the big stuff and clear the downed stuff, and mow away. Your chainsaw can take a lot of abuse if you (mostly) keep it out of the dirt. Cut the stumps off nearly flush to the ground.

I agree that SCUTs have their place. That said, I'd like to hear from dealers which happens more frequently: SCUT owners trade up to a larger CUT CUT owners trade down to a smaller SCUT I'm guessing that budget drives many to choose a SCUT for their first tractor.

Here was my $5k solution (took a year to find)

A landscape rake with guide wheels would do the trick (the guide wheels make you a better operator)

Any late 90s 25-35hp 4wd CUT would do the trick. (John Deere 850, New Holland TC33, Kubota L3010, etc). They can be found in your price range if they don't have a loader, but it might take a while. As also mentioned, a used industrial roadside mowing tractor might also be an option.

I would leave the bucket as is and install a tooth bar, or individeal teeth. When I had a skid steer, it came with a smooth bucket and a tooth bucket. The tooth bucket was on 95% of the time.

You seem to have your mind made up on a SCUT. I think you will be happy with that. I think you would be even happier with a Small Frame CUT. About the same footprint, but larger wheels, more traction and ground clearance.

Probably the sleeper of Used New Hollands is the TC35. It is a Shabura built LARGE FRAME CUT which means it will have lots of traction and capabilities. Not common to find, but a good value when you do.

No matter what size, you really need to try a modded saw. I just got a modded 50cc Echo. Very light, and fighting above its weight. Nothing like having a saw that handles like a lighter saw, and performs like a heavier saw. Win - Win.

After I bought my first chisel chain, I never looked back. They cut faster. Any chain dulls when put in the dirt. I do a lot of trail clearing - cutting stumps off close to the ground and I don't notice a loss of performance any worse than a semi chisel in the dirt.
