My father got tired of our mailbox getting hit by the town plow and built an upside down "L" from 1" pipe with the box hanging from chains. If hit it would be dented but still worked.

Ma and Pa's place was at the end of a dead end road with a large turn around area.
In the winter the Snow Plow would turn around 15-20 feet across our lawn and take out the mailbox in doing so. He had plenty of room on the road. Just a city dick head.
It wasn't so much a lawn thing as much as having to clean up and level the area after the thaw.
Pa often worked construction in the winter. One job they had they dug up some rocks the size of small VW bugs. The contractor had to get rid of them and was happy Pa wanted them.
They put 2 of them on either side of the driveway and beside the mailbox just on our property.
Few weeks later we had a major snow storm with high winds. The rocks looked like snow drifts.
Bang! Broke some stuff on the plow. Nobody ever said anything.🤭
Driver never crossed the line after that though.
Years later someone paid good money for the rocks for landscaping.:giggle:

Years ago, I worked for an excavating contractor with similar issues. In his case, there was an interstate exit close by. Apparently, people would turn in the wrong direction and upon realizing it, turn around in his driveway. Often, they would tear up his lawn or the mailbox. So we loaded up some huge boulders one by one on the equipment trailer and placed them on his property. He only had to pick up broken plastic after that, lol.

I live on a street with lots of crazy drivers, but the only one that ever hit my mailbox was my mail carrier....twice on the same day.
At my last place, the mailman smoked my mailbox a couple times.

Each time, I bent the box back into shape with a pair of pliers.

At the new address someone driving a dually plowed my mailbox over.

Judging by the tracks, they must have had one of the rr duals leave the road and dragged the truck fully off the road.

They left the road, plowed over my mailbox relocating it 20ft and then back onto the road.

Bent the mailbox back into place. Installed on a 4" post this time.

Added DOT tape to make it more conspicuous.
