Most states have gone 35 mph for the max speed of the SMV, and yes if visible while trailering it is supposed to covered if visible. A ticket could be issued.
Half the idiots who live in my state have all gone out and bought SMV placards, and mounted them to a post on either side of their entrance to their driveway, or on their mailbox posts. The SMV has lost it's meaning here.

I see that too often and it grinds me to see it, in this state at least it's actually against the traffic laws.

I live in a rural and see that way too often. I don't know if there is way to make them understand there is a real purpose behind the meaning of the symbol.

Most juristictions actually have laws against placing SMV signs on fixed objects such as mailboxes or driveway markers, if they can be seen from the road. You can use them all you want, on anything you want... until they can be seen from the road.

So, it's really just a matter of getting the police to actually do the job for which they're being paid. It's not like these things are hard to find, or that there's any question as to who owns them. Seems a much easier way to earn their ticket money, than hiding behind bushes and clocking folks doing 8 mph over the speed limit on country roads.

For a while, truck drivers were using SMV signs to mark the end of their loads of logs. I picked up several off the side of the road that way. I haven't seen it lately, not sure if they were admonished or just stopped doing it.

The modern American version of, "get your ducks in a row"?
For those that want to get their ducks in a row and not line up their balls.....

I bought a packet of dot reflective tape strips.

Put one strip on each side of the mail box, and then cut another strip in half and wrapped them around the post in a couple spots.

What prompted me to do that was pulling out one morning with my service truck and almost smoking the mail box

I live on a street with lots of crazy drivers, but the only one that ever hit my mailbox was my mail carrier....twice on the same day.

Just outside my gate there are three mailboxes on a plank/posts platform. Across the narrow lane, the old farmhouse there has been prettied up to become an AirB&B. I just checked, its a little over $3,000 for five nights.

Guests over there must be city folks driving airport rentals. The mail platform's posts have been backed into so many times - not even in the dark - that they are now leaning back 20-30 degrees. I gave up trying to keep the posts plumb and just maintain the mailboxes securely attached to the assembly.

Sounds like it's time to put in a 12" diameter, 1/4" wall well casing sunk in 6 feet deep and filled with concrete.
I used to have a 6" I-beam mail box post sunk about 3 feet in the ground. Only one car ever hit it, a teenager in his brother's Chrysler K-car. He hit it dead center, leaned it over at about a 45° angle, went completely over it, ripping out numerous things under the car. He managed to drive a mile or so before the trans ran out of fluid. The car was totaled. Cops made him pay me for a new mail box.
