Tractor
Jinma 284
I recently purchased a 2007 Jinma 284 that has been sitting for 8-10 years. The previous owner said the only thing wrong with it was the water pump went out. He had started changing the water pump but for some reason he never completed that job and the tractor just sat with the water pump removed and the air filter disconnected from the intake manifold. I removed the intake manifold to make sure there wasn't anything inside after sitting for so long and found a mouse or small rat had gotten in there died and decomposed. I removed the head cleaned everything real good lapped the valves and I'm in the process of putting everything back together. The fuel system is pretty gummed up but I'm dealing with that okay I think. What I'm now wondering is what other things should I be on the lookout for in a tractor that has set for 8 to 10 years. I do plan on changing all the fluids and filters. Any advice on what other things to look out for would be greatly appreciated.

You never know because you never really know why it was parked. BuT we can keep our fingers crossed, and maybe no surprises

Before starting it, I'd spin it a few times by hand and make sure it spins. I think that engine has a compression release so you can spin it with the starter with the compression released and see if the oil pressure rises, you should be able to get the oil light to go off. If it spins freely and has oil pressure I don't see hurting it by starting it.

Thank you. After cleaning the mouse/rat stuff out of the head and one of the cylinders it turns over by hand just fine. I'm waiting for a new primer pump and sediment bowl to arrive. I guess in the mean time I could verify oil pressure. Any other things on the tractor as a whole that I should be looking out for?
