Dumb question about 2 stroke oil.

/ Dumb question about 2 stroke oil. #41
In an emergency I would pick my poorest saw and mix it heavy (like +50%) and do absolute min. if I had too.
It seems that you are not yet past your Molotov-cocktail days; that is the exact formula. Good luck with trying to get any 2-stroke even to start on that. In my 60s moped days there was only normal engine oil and for those the mixture was 25:1. Decoke every 2000 - 3000 miles or so. CalG is right.

You are right with the chain oil; it is a lossy 1-time use, so the lowest grade of the cheapest oil is perfect.

I assume they don't know filling LPG cylinders inside a building is a code violation.

It’s a covered loading dock. The whole front end 80 feet wide is open.

You would get arrested in California if they see smoke from you chainsaw.

I am pretty much prepped for the big ice storm ( which most likely won’t even happen) and I realized I forgot something: two stroke oil for my chainsaw. I’ve got about half a gallon mixed and I might have one bottle of the oil somewhere. That will probably be more than enough but there are a lot of big trees in my yard and one my street.

So my question is, can you mix gas and regular motor oil for two stroke engines. I’m assuming not but don’t know why.

So how did you fare with the weather. Here in Ohio the forecast was spot on. I remember in Jan 1978 they never gave any indication that the blizzard was coming. Here we had at least a two day warning
I live just south of Charlotte, NC. We got a few inches of sleet and a little snow. Very little ice and no trees down or power out in our area so we were fortunate.

They're talking about snow this coming Saturday too.

Same over here in Jackson County. Pretty much a non event. But I prepared to stay at home without power for a few days.

I would say no, I would not do it. Here is what happened to me on using a brand of 2 stroke oil mix. I purchased a Husqvarna 390XP for milling purposes. I have always used Husqvarna saws and their oil brand. I had run out of oil. While at a local fair a vendor had a booth with lesser quality items, IMO. He had a bunch of CAM 2 two stroke oil. I had never heard of it so I was cautious at the start. He is there to sell as much as he can. I questioned him on the quality of this oil. Of course he is going to promote it. Well I purcchased a 6 pack because I was out of mixing oil. I mix at 40:1 as opposed to recommended 50:1. I always run non ethonol fuel and I mixed up a two gallon can with the above mentioned oil. I filled the saw and was not milling at that time but blocking firewood. I always wear hearing protection as well. Being on the defensive you might say due to this oil as I was blocking, even wearing muffs I thought I heard a different sound. I immediately shut the saw down. Removed my muffs and tried to fire up the saw. I noticed the pull cord seemed harder to pull. SOB, did I seize up my saw? I then thought, ****, did I not mix the fuel? I went to the can and poured some out. It DID NOT look mixed at all. I put some on my fingers, it felt like pure fuel and no oil! You dumb ass, you ruined this saw because of not mixing. I went to the trash can and found the empty bottle. I did mix the fuel, but the color of the fuel looked as though I did not mix it. Husqvarna oil mixed is blue in color. I was told to put some marvel mystery oil in the cylinder and let it set, get some husqvarna 2 stroke oil and remix the two gallon can. The next day I tried to pull the cord, the more I pulled slowly the easier it got. I dumped the remaining fuel out, filled the saw back up with new oil and fuel. This was 6 plus years ago. Before doing this I pulled the muffler to look at the piston. That seemed okay. I refilled the saw and everything has been fine, thankfully. The lesson I learned is, whatever brand of saw I use I always always always use the oil designed for that brand. Husqvarna in this case. Had I not been cautious I know I would have destroyed the motor. From my own experience, some say any oil is better than no oil. That may be all well and good. Not for me, I will NEVER use anything other than the recommended oil brand. That was a $1000,00 saw back then. Since then I have milled many many logs, cut many cords of wood. Thankfully I shut the saw down when I did! I would say no to your question and get the designed oil, even if you have to wait for the shop to reopen if it is on a weekend. I know this does not answer your question, I am just a regular guy using what I think is common sense now. I hope this helps! We lived 43 years totally off grid and heated soley with wood. Not one time ever did I cut a good standing tree. All the firewood came from blowdowns or widow makers. I am proud to say that too. When big storms rolled in, I knew I had firewood. Be well, be safe, and most of all be happy

If one has to use 4-stroke oil in a 2-stroke engine, would it be better to run the engine harder to reduce carbon fouling?
Chainsaws are run full throttle all the time, or are set up to except when briefly idling. So one cannot really run the harder.

I ran out of 2stroke oil for my chainsaw a few weeks ago but had a gallon or so for my 2stroke boat motor and thought maybe?but upon googling i found that each are for 2stroke the difference in those was one formulated for water cooled the other for air cooled and the boat oil wasnt sufficient enough in some ingredients to cool the chainsaw and would end up locked up.So no i wouldnt attempt something like 10w/40 on any other 4stroke oil its not worth the risk

Yes it’s not worth it unless you’re planning to buy a new one anyway. Since most or all of us are rural people we need inventory. I couldn’t list all the things I have here so I can do what I need without chasing some little item. The internet is a great help. Self sufficiency.

My old two stroke oil says right on the can for outboards, mowers and saws…

I have a fantastic little Toro two stroke mower that really winds up…

I knew you would pick up I wrote can…

My guess made about 50 years ago.

Without going into a lengthy discussion some things are compatible one way but not the other.
