Good Morning from Central Texas.
5:15am and 70.2 degrees and 67.1 dew point. A little muggy feeling, but will try and build a compost pile area today with some wire mesh fence for the 1 million leaves yet to clean up. Average high temp around here is low 60's so a little warm and definitely TOO DRY.
Hope all have a great day !

Good Tractor Morning,
Vt, 14 to start going to 22. So the temps rose overnight.
Have been trying to get my portable radio station working up here, the SWR , standing wave ratio, is kind of high but I’m hoping I can work a couple of my buddies on 80m this morning. I’m only running 50 watts power so I’m hoping I have enough of a signal to reach Illinois and the other fellow not as far.

Not sure if the gang is coming later today or tomorrow, should figure that out a bit later.

Frits, horrible accident, not much left to that car !

Hope all have a great day !🙏

31 and clear, heading to 47.

We had our full family Christmas gathering yesterday. Great food and laughs. In the middle of it I took Della to the vet right before they closed...acting wonky like the time before...we get to the vet and she is normal...checked for UTI, etc, but all okay. Sons gave me some green coffees to roast...among them a couple from Hawaii (yum) and one from Nepal...I never heard of growing coffee there. Our granddaughter was the best part.

Good morning, the low is 7 and going up to 14°F. Wind E 5 mph. Cloudy.

Another 3" of snow to plow. That'll be what I am doing today, starting about noon.

When I worked winters for a contractor plowing municipal streets, it was up at O dark thirty (0200 hrs) and plow until the job was done. Did that until the house was paid for. After that I only worked the summers.

Breakfast time!

Stay safe all

seriously nasty out
almost a half inch of hard glaze over everything
shovel just skidded off the top
used entire container of ice melt on walkway
went to get extra in garage, thankful some stones that otherwise beat up
the snowblower were sticking through enough to give me some grip.
one container hard as a rock. Next one half full but still good, so for sure I'll need to stock
up.

after today not going to be much ice melt available
hope not to jinx myself but surprised power still on.
my brother said comcast wifi was down earlier.

Balmy morning here today. Heading to the low 80s, I've been cleaning up the junk and empty boxes that have been accumulating at the barn. The new burn barrel is working great! ;) I'm trying to get away from the "I might need that some day" to a clean area to work and store equipment. I'll be getting rid of the chicken coop and run I built as part of the barn years ago. I'll use the covered area for equipment instead.

Good morning TBN crew! Near freezing temps here this am and with a chance of ice, we decided to not head to camp which is funny, we've been there nearly every weekend, since we purchased it. :) After this warm, stretch, we got real winter weather moving back in. Being here, we got lots of things to take care of. Dearest needs to buy some new BC skis.

low 80's sounds mighty nice as I come in with a sniffling nose
ice melt had softened walkway ice enough for me to get under it, tried to reuse
that part by throwing out on driveway so whatever ice melt is left will work out there.
A better idea than chucking it into the lawn

threw out more birdseed, amazed how much they had eaten since yesterday
hauled the full icy trash cans back to garage.
that was a real losers walk routine.
of course I had not taken out trash the week before and then this included
xmas packaging. Not good timing for trash company to not show up when they are soliciting tips

think I some laundry to put away and then will clean up living room after festivities.
always finding a napkin somewhere

but first going to enjoy rest of this slice of Popgadget's pumpkin nut bread with
a mug of green tea. yum

lol... we got the same thing, almost an hour west of you. My poor dogs went skidding across the walk like an ice rink, when they went charging out the door after breakfast this morning. And because I have one new dog that gets spooked and won't go unless there's perfectly clean grass under her rear, I was standing out there with them for about 20 minutes this AM.

We have a good fraction of an acre of decorative dyed exposed aggregate concrete walkways and patios, all as slick as pond ice, but I've found any ice melt I can easily find in the stores really destroys the concrete. So I try to let the sun do its job whenever possible, but this might be one day when I'm going to have to break down and spread some ice melt, as I don't think sun is going to cut thru this. I did spray the concrete with a good sealer last year, so hopefully that will minimize the damage.

The driveway is on its own. No way will a plow touch this hard ice.

Stay safe on all that ice! Falling on ice is no fun.

Nepali coffee! How fun. Do you know which estate(s)? Coffee has been coming out of Nepal for a long time (70s/80s?), as far as I know. Unlike Vietnam, much of it is Arabica, planted a little lower down than the tea estates.
The Nepal Coffee Co., an early leader brought in TQM (total quality management) to try to make a great product.

I think that the history of tea production helped a bit as farmers were used to the TLC required for tea, and applied it to coffee production. Now that I think of it the production does have similarities as well, both are picked, fermented (coffee and black / oolong tea), and dried.

Still raining and 40F outside. Not exactly rushing outside to do fiddly work, and the hillsides are now ice slick clay after the rains. No walking on the slopes, if I can help it, or I'll have to dig out my mountaineering crampons.

Apparently in the windstorm on Christmas Eve did a number on the local observatory (UC Lick Observatory, the #2 largest refracting telescope in the US by a couple of inches, behind Yerkes.)
1766846637845.png

Supposedly, the upper limit on large refractor telescopes is set by the thermal instabilities in the glass that warps it slightly as the glass starts radiating heat to the -450F temperature of space. The original telescope is pre-electricity, and ran on water power, at the top of a mountain. I love the engineering ingenuity behind that.

All the best,

Peter

Good Morning
24° and sunny, might see 30° at best today.
We are in the same boat as Drew and everyone else in SE PA. Covered in ice, and not getting any help from Ma Nature in dealing with the ice she left us last night.

I had a yoke from a P38 on a mount that I made hanging up in the shop, Santa brought me a framed picture to go with it.

Son and I got all the driveway markers in. We use a home made mini post pounder to drive them in. In the most bizarre twist, one of the plastic caps came off in the tube, and the next one stuck in it. I had to braze an end mill to a long rod to clean the 3 wedged in caps out of the pipe.

Thats like the odds of dropping an breaking a circulator.

I did get a new one installed, but not without a little fight. The new one had dual flanges so you could clock it either way, it never dawned on me that the circulator was too close to the wall to clear the unused flange, so I had to cut them ofc with a whiz wheel.

The rest of the way went pretty well, had dinner of leftovers at son and DIL’s, came home, watched a couple of Landman episodes as we catch up on season 2.

Not much planned for today, Daughter and SIL are coming for gift exchange, she worked on Christmas. As an ER charge nurse, working holidays is a fact of life.

There is no use trying to plow or shovel out there its solid ice.

Well Morning all;

10AM here and I'm just finishing going through these forums. Finished breakfast half an hour ago. Slept in late didn't get up till 8AM. Been sitting here drinking coffee and thinking about going outside, looks like a solid 7 inches of snow over night, with a forecast of rain and freezing rain for late Sunday and Monday. The back blade is on the tractor and it will just be a matter of getting it started and letting her warm up a bit then clean some snow that usually takes a couple of hours. Then I'll look at the forecast and decide if I'll drop the blade off so I can hookup to the sander or wait and see just what we get. Will likely wait in case I want to scrape a bit before sanding, or if I get lucky and the rain clears all the ice. Seldom get that fortunate.
Then one daughter SIL and grand daughter will be stopping by Sunday morning. That should be the end of the Holiday get togethers as we don't do anything for New Years Eve.

Well heck I'd better get off my butt and get moving.

All stay safe and well

Morning all, 28 going up to 33 and Ice
Everything is covered in 1/2" of ice this morning, fun taking the dog for a slide

Had a visit from a tall Elf named Drew carrying a cake from Paul. Good way to start the day.
Then off to pick up some fixins for today's dinner with family if the roads aren't too bad for them to travel here.

With the next day looking cold, ice will be here for a few days, put some ice melt down, the pet safe kind, Not as good as the regular stuff, but it has some grit too.
Will go out later and see what can be done to remove some of the ice.

We finally got our invite to the Christmas eve party we went to, was mailed on Dec 4th, showed up Dec 26th, who says the mail isn't working right

Be well,
